.... as it stands on Sept. 22nd, the Cubs will have a protected first round pick (#12 overall) in the '06 amateur draft. So, unless they go on a tear to end the season (yeah right!), they at least won't lose their first round pick if they go out and sign a type A free agent this offseason.

Too bad there are slim pickings projected.... but at least Hendry can be aggressive (if he is indeed interested in any of Giles/Furcal/Burnett/etc.) and not risk a potentially high-impact draft pick.

I would think Nomar would be a Type A. Doesn't he get compared to other FAs at his position?

How well does his 137 total games the last 2 years compare to the other FA's at his position though?

True. I don't know.

The Cubs are now in a tie for the 13th overall pick. The teams in the 11-18 pick area are really bunched up though.

They usually will be. There's a fair number of teams that finish within a few games of .500 almost every year. Or at least there should be (in other words, I'm making that statement without looking it up and counting on probablility theory to do my work for me).

I just hope the Cubs finish with the 15th pick or higher...

What a sad season. The Cubs have too much payroll at their disposal and too deep a minor league system to be picking in the top 1/2 of the draft.

Yeah but we get another good prospect who will eventually get to sit behind a proven player like Todd Hollandsworth. What's not to love?

is nomar considered a type "a" fa? if so, they get another 1st round sandwich pick when he leaves dont they?

I don't see the Cubs offering Nomar arbitration, which, in years past at least, would mean no pick.

We might be able to get a compensatory pick if he leaves, though.

They really should come up with more than one term for arbitration to denote the different meanings.

For the Cubs to receive picks for Nomar, one of a few things would have to happen:

1) He could be signed by his new team before 12/7

2) If he's not signed by a new team by 12/7, the Cubs have to decide whether ot offer binding arbitration to Nomar by that date. He then has until late December to decide to take it or pass on it.

3) if he takes it, he is considered signed by the Cubs to a one year deal, though the two sides may have to go to the arbitrator to figure out the amount of the contract.

4) If another team signs him before he decides on the Cubs offer of arbitration, the Cubs get compensated.

5) If he rejects the Cubs offer and another team signs him, the Cubs get compensated.

Only if the Cubs offer him arbitration, which they won't. The only way the Cubs get compensation for Nomar is if he signs early before the deadline to offer arbitration.

I can't see the Cubs offering arbitration. If they do, Nomar will no doubt accept it and he would be able to get a guaranteed 7-8 million in arbitration.

And the Cubs have locked up a top 15 pick!

Looks to be as high as #12, no lower than #13. It appears we are in a tie with Texas.

I was wondering how they determined who picks 12th and who picks 13th.

Bud says the winner of the All-Star game.

EDIT:

I'm kidding....I don't know. I just realized that $elig'$ ideas are so goofy that somebody might think this may be the way they really do pick.
