Now that the minor league regular season is over what are everyone's top 5 propsects, 2 seperate lists for Pitchers and Position players.

You should only take into account their 2005 stats, not past accomplishments or future promise.

Guys like Cedeno/Mitre/Hill/Murton count.

As I read the question, these ar the top 5 prospects, just based on 2005 minor league stats, not tools/athletic abilities shown this season. Here goes:

Position Players (in order):

SS Ronny Cedeño

OF Brandon Sing

OF Felix Pie

2B Eric Patterson

OF Matt Murton

Pitchers (in order):

RHP Ricky Nolasco

LHP Rich Hill

LHP Sean Marshall

RHP Sean Gallagher

LHP Mark Pawelek

Of course, Ronny, Felix and Murton didn't qualify in terms of ABs in the minors and Pawelek in terms of IP. :P And, of course, my top prospects list looks quite different from that.

So in essence, if we are not looking at the players ceiling or future, then these aren't lists of the best prospects, but of the best players of 2005.

I know it seems like a nitpicky thing, but I'm just trying to understand what you are asking for. A top prospect by definition is someone who has a good future ahead of them regardless of how they played this season. A top player of 2005 is something quite different.

In that case, considering the levels at which they played:

1. Cedeno

2. Murton

3. Patterson

4. Sing

5. Pie

1. Nolasco

2. Hill

3. Pinto

4. Marshall

5. Gallagher

Well, you said just 2005 stats, NOT just 2005 minor league stats. If you consider ML success too. I'd go:

1. Murton

2. Cedeno

3. E Patterson

4. Sing

5. Pie

Pitchers

1. Gallagher

2. Hill

3. Nolasco

4. Pinto

5. Pawelek

In fact, I'll go one further and give you a 2005 Cubs All-Minor League 1st Team (prospects only i.e. no McClain).

I can't consider Pinto on a list like this because of his poor performance at AAA to start the season.

Yeah, but those numbers at AA are right up there with everybody else on the same list. Doesn't that qualify as a rebound from a bad start?

Indeed, it's a strong rebound. But there are pitchers who had better stats for the full season, because they did better in April (Ryu, for example).

Well, here we're just considering 2005 stats, so repetition of the level would not be considered. In a real prospect ranking, that should definitely be considered.

I have a bat that Buck gave me earlier this season. I got it when he needed his camo jersey back. Maybe now is a good time to sell it to raise some funds for charity.

Based on 2005 stats alone. Pie didn't play enough to earn the nod.

I'm as big a Fuld fan as anyone but I can't agree. Pie's numbers over half a season were outstanding, and he's two levels above Fuld and 4 years younger. It's not much of a contest in my mind.

I think a better way to couch the question is, what would your updated list of the Cubs Top Ten Prospects look like (regardless of position), after taking 2005 into account? A pre-preview of a BA or NSBB Top Ten list this winter, if you will. Here's my take, and I'll consider anyone not currently qualified as having their ML rookie season to be fair game:

1. Felix Pie

2. Ronny Cedeno

3. Renyel Pinto

4. Matt Murton

5. Eric Patterson

6. Brandon Sing

7. Sean Gallagher

8. Jermaine Van Buren

9. Ryan Harvey

10. Rich Hill

David Aardsma would JUST miss out and be #11 on my list. Top Ten Biggest Disappointments of 2005? Falling way down the charts due to either bad performance, lack of progress, or injuries:

1. Brian Dopirak

2. Richard Lewis

3. Sergio Mitre

4. Angel Guzman

5. Ryan Harvey (yes, I put him on both lists)

6. Jon Leicester

7. Sean Marshall

8. Chadd Blasko

9. Jason Dubois

10. Renyel Pinto (failure to stick at AAA qualifies as a disappointment)

My "just missed guy" here for #11 is Bobby Brownlie. I think it's a stretch to consider Mitre, Leicester and Dubois as "prospects", but they began the year as such, and relative to expectations, were huge disappointments (what the heck happened to Ice?) If you want to replace them, I include Todd Wellemeyer, Jon Connolly, and Luke Hagerty, then.

And finally, Top Ten Surprises of 2005. Guys that really improved their stock and exceeded expectations--so someone you already thought highly of like Murton doesn't count.

1. Ronny Cedeno

2. Jermaine Van Buren

3. Ricky Nolasco

4. Adam Greenberg

5. Andy Shipman

6. JK Ryu

7. Sam Fuld

8. Scott Moore

9. Ryan Theriot

10. Luis Montanez

My honorable mention shout-out for #11 would be the aforementioned Brandon Sing.
