Todd Walker and Jerry Hairston also are prime trade bait before Sept. 1, when players must be on a team's roster to be eligible for postseason play. Walker is probably as good as gone, but Hairston may be a more valuable trade commodity at the winter meetings. Nomar Garciaparra has a no-trade clause, and there's little interest in Todd Hollandsworth.

That sucks if he gets dealt. He's productive and he would be cheap next year. Who do the Cubs plan on putting at 2B in 2006?

i have no idea if they're getting rid of BOTH Hairston and Walker. Maybe re-sign Nomar for cheap next year and put him at 2B and add Furcal for SS? Regardless, Walker should not be traded period. His option is very cheap next year and it's quite obvious that the organization does not care for Todd Walker at all if they are getting rid of a quality player like him just like that.

I would be very disspointed if Walker was traded. His option is very affordable, given his production. Nevertheless, count me among those not too worried, since it's Sullivan . . .

Thing is, we've all bitched about how atrocious this defense is. If they're going to keep Walker, they need to find a gold-glove, make that platinum-glove SS. With Aramis at third, there is just no way you can keep things status quo.

Which also begs the question, who here would be upset if they tried to find another position to play Ramirez? You'd still have his power, I'm just wondering how long he can cut it at 3rd.

I've never really complained about his defense, it really hasn't been that bad. His Rate for the year is like 97.

Might as well get something for him while they can. Cubs definitely have to upgrade on defense next year.

Furcal is painfully overrated and will get way more money than he's really worth. Cedeno might have a dropoff in some areas, but he'll be cheaper and a better long term option.

Also, Sullivan has a history of throwing plentiful amounts of crap at the wall to see if it would stick. I'm not believing it until I see it.

do not trade walker, this is probably the stupidest thing you could do.

hell, it makes more sense to trade lee than it does to trade walker.

if this happens, im going to complain a lot and then still watch every game next year.

I remember when Jim Thome played 3rd. Given, his move to 1st was a direct result of the addition of Travis Fryman, but irregardless, it worked wonders for him.

I can only think that the Soriano deal was really close before the deadline, but Texas wanted to try and make a run with him this year, and work something out in the offseason. They were only a few games out on July 31. Could also be why they didn't work anything out with the Twins, because they had a deal with the Cubs on the table.

Still don't agree with it. Absolutely no reason for Walker NOT to be a Cub next year.

There would be so many teams interested in Walker, because they'd essentially be trading for him for next season also.

He's a good value and they wouldn't find a better one on the free agent market.

Cubs are stupid.

Yes. Very, very stupid. You're just creating yet another hole you need to fill in the offseason. There currently is no better replacement, and if you trade Walker you're taking a very big risk that you can find one.

With the crappy job Hendry did filling holes this past offseason, I'm not overly optimistic that he can adequately fill them this offseason, and he has less to work with on the FA market.

What a stupid move this would be. Walker's very productive, especially at his price, and the Cubs have no replacement. He should be penciled in next year at 2B. As for Soriano or any other trade, the Cubs have far too many holes to worry about upgrading a position that's already a strength.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Bravo.

Lost in the Walker talk, I found this very aggravating, yet very Dusty-like (going against Hendry's wishes again):

"I think [Murton] held his own admirably coming up from Double A," Hendry said. "So it's not like we're going to have 12 guys without big-league experience up here by Sept. 1. … I think if Cedeno and Murton are playing, that's a positive, and I think our fan base would appreciate that."

But Baker may have a different opinion on what the fan base wants.

"We owe it to ourselves and to our fans to put the best team on the field and try to win," Baker said.

That suggests kids like Cedeno and Murton won't play on a regular basis.

"It's too early for me," Baker said. "I haven't been in this position in years. You still owe your best to the team and to the fans and to everybody, for now. Eventually you're going to have to start thinking about that, but right now we plan to end up the best we can. We owe it to ourselves, to the paying customers and out of respect for the game."

But, as others have said, it was written by Sullivan so who really knows what's going on.

I'm not necessarily advocating a Walker trade. That said, if they keep Walker, and if Hendry decides to re-sign Nomar to play SS, the Cubs would probably have the worst defensive infield (excluding Lee) in the NL, if not all of MLB.

Perhaps the org. has already discussed with Nomar the possibility of moving to 2nd, making Walker redundant.
