I just injected myself with some positive pills. If for some reason we swept Houston this week and pulled to within say 4 games at the end of that series....

I haven't been real positive of the entire season and lately especially, however the only thing that has kept me from thoroughly throwing in the towel was the knowledge that we still have a ton of games left with both the Cards and Stros. Even if the playoffs aren't likely, the opportunity to play spoiler still gives me reason to see the Cubs win.

Once you concede to wanting to play "spoiler", there is no turning back. Resist, resist!

Wait...my bad.

He doesn't head hunt! That's what I was thinking of.

In fact, in 3 Night in August, he does talk about nailing Luis Gonzalez.

Forget what I said!

Ok, that's better. Consider my Cards fan / troll comment w/drawn.

Just so you guys didn't miss it. ^^

My apologies.

This isn't looking good. Saturday's game is the only one I have confidence in us taking. Marquis has sucked lately. Then again, Mulder came in red hot and tanked. Why can't Marquis pull a Mulder and do a 180?

Zambrano just kicks our asses, though.

Anyone else smell Cards fan (or troll)?

Yes, I'm a Cards fan. I've already 'admitted' to that.

Another word of advice. People tend to be more reactionary in Game threads. While we welcome fans of opposing teams, NSBB is first and foremost a site for Cubs fans. As mods have said before, opposing teams fans might be best served to tread lightly in the game threads, especially when you haven't posted elsewhere.

BTW, Welcome!

The funny thing is, we only lost 2.5 games in the Wild Card in believe during our 8 game slide. The Astros could have burried us, but they didnt. Maybe that is them returning the favor for last year?

It's hard, but I'm trying. Games like this make me feel like we belong in the hunt. I hope they can turn it around, but I'm also realistic.

Because why? Sabermetrics? I'd genuinely like to hear what you have to say.

Sabermetrics tell me what a player has done and better idea of what he might do.

Simple strategy manuever as far as why to pitch to the #8 hitter, some psychological was well.

Obviously, there will be a runner in scoring position. I'll use their number in the batting order to signal which ones they are.

No outs...

Runners on 1st (8) and 2nd (7)

9 hitter bunts the 8 and 7 hitters into scoring position, putting the 8 hitter into scoring position is more valuable than the out created by typically weak 9 hitter. This will still give the 1-2 hitters a very good chance to drive in at least 1 runner and possibly two.

The 8 hitter is typically a below avg. hitter and the chances of him being retired without getting on base are much greater.

1 out...

While you increase the chance of a DP, you'll likely see the sac. bunt, and with two outs and the leadoff is still a greater chance of creating a run than a runner on 2B with the 8 hitter up followed by the 9 hitter.

2 outs...

You increase the chance of surviving the inning without a run, b/c there is a difference between a 8 and 9 hitter as far as production. But, that difference isn't worth having your 9 hitter leadoff an inning compared to the leadoff guy.

Plus, I like my pitchers to go after every hitter. I don't like the concept of telling my pitcher that he might not get this guy out, complete confidence is letting pitchers succeed.

Food for thought:

Mulder at night: 12-1, 2.14 ERA.

Mulder during day: 1-4, 6.93 ERA. (not including today)

Anomaly, or something to it?

Someone else already mentioned this stat. His career splits are closer, though. Maybe Mulder needs to adjust to playing more day games? I think you play more night games as a West Coast team, especially with the unbalanced schedule.

Wrigley would be a bad career move :)

Wise advice.

UK, points well taken. I really didn't take into consideration that there were no outs in the inning. I was in a blind rage from the whippin' we were in the midst of.

I understand where you're coming from. But, give La Russa credit -- he's one of the lone manager's that has pitched to Bonds over the past few seasons. His logic mirrors yours. He doesn't like the pitchers automatically conceding victory to Bonds.

Well, hopefully we have some better luck tomorrow. Nice meeting you guys. Please remember anything that leaves a sour taste in your mouth should be taken lightly (IE: my username). It's all in fun! The Cubs/Cards rivalry is heated, but that doesn't mean the fans can't be classy. Let's not make this Red Sox/Yankees!

"Go Cubs Go" is a much better postgame choice than the tired "Get Down Tonight."

It's nice to see a rare complete game from the old man.

There, I'm being positive!
