than right now.

No heart. Gutless. Manager makes it appear that he is dumber than a box of rocks. We are wasting away young talent on the bench just because the manager is a "players manager" and won't sit the veterans or "his guys" for better talent, because it is younger.

I will never stop being a fan, but I gotta tell ya... I'm really starting to just look forward to September and football season.

Me either. I've went through some horrible seasons but this feels like I have my arms tied behind my back. Baker just makes this too hard to enjoy the game in any way, shape, or form.

You are right, this just seems more painful than other failed seasons.

Expectations + talent with a whole lot of mismanaging and poor GM judgement will do that to you.

Add poor execution by our players and you have the formula that will be remembered as "the 2005 Cubs." It's been a heck of a long year, that's for sure :-(

I have to say, the end of last year was still worse for me. Those games against the pitiful Reds and Mets were absolutely unbearable.

But if this year continues this poorly...it'll surpass that

The Cubs haven't made me feel so unhappy since the NLCS. I was really getting into this season with DLee having such an amazing year and I thought we had a great shot at the wild card, despite Woody and Dusty. Our post ASB run got my hopes up and now we undid all of that. I love the winning streaks but it isn't worth the losing streaks. I want a team that takes 2 out of 3 and grinds out a series win. These Cubs are too streaky and they're killing me. I've pretty much given up at this point and I have lost all interest. We have so many automatic outs that it isn't even fun to watch us hit. I feel bad for Lee, Zambrano, Burnitz and Dempster. Those guys try hard and are fun to watch but having Macias bat #2 too much to overcome. What's worse is that this year's free agent crop is really weak. All we can hope is that JH gets creative this winter.

I'm not going to lie...this is the first time I can remember that I've had the opportunity to watch the Cubs and I have passed...3 days and counting now. It doesn't sound like I'm missing anything either.

My wife and 2 young children have been out of town for the past week, and it's summer and I work for a University. I was very excited about the prospect of devoting the past week to Cubs baseball. And what did I get? Another stick in the eye. The Cubs have ruined my summer - again.

completely agree.

last year i allowed my expectations to get incredibly and unabashedly high. i doubt that ill ever expose myself like that again. i dont think ill ever be as crushed by a sports team again.

I am on a leave of absence from work this weekend (I work Weekend 2nd shift.) The best part about it was that I was gonna be able to watch every game live. I would have rather been at work.

Don't worry; you'll fall in love again someday.

Yep. Those were so abysmal.....my poor cubs hat took so much abuse that week. You could literally see it falling out of their hands. At least they never had the wild card lead here.

EDIT: Treebeard: You will. And I will. Like abused spouses we'll always come back when the Cubs start promising the world. :(

I caught the first three innings yesterday in the car, and I feel awful for Santo. The Mets series just destroyed him, and he said he's never seen worse baseball than these past three games.

To me last year was much more painful than this year. After 2003 I was so excited for 04. I think the Cubs had a better team last year. Once all the stuff about Chip and Stone came to light I got really fed up. I was embarased.

Now I see them as just another medicore Cubs team. I still think they have the talent but I think it hasn't been used properly and now I think the team is shutting down on Dusty. A few more months of play like this and there is no way Dusty will be back next year. Hendry only said he was safe for the season, which is the logical thing to do given the number of games played.

My prediction is that the Cubs finish well below .500 and Dusty is not back. Who they choose to replace him is what I am now fearing.

As a teacher for almost 50 years and a Cub fan for longer than that,

I have often been accused of having too much patience. It was

severly tested by the dismal showing against the Mets. I have managed

Little league teams that played better than the Friday Night debacle.

I don't care where the blame lies- I'm not into that- I almost quit when

they traded Andy Pafko for garbage in the early 50's. I'm close to

that point again.

I'm past the point of pain, the Cubs have been extremely entertaining for me the past week. I've laughed more then I do for most standup comics

When you play in an atmosphere where:

1) good play is not rewarded by more playing time especially when you are young

2) the players starting ahead of you are doing a horrible job

3) you're strengths are not being capitalized on

4) your weaknesses are being magnified because you are constantly put in the wrong situations

then you would lose the desire to play at 100% everyday for 162 days.

Baseball players are human too.

I doubt I'll really go out of my way (i.e. make a sacrifice) to see another Cubs game this year.

I can honestly say the same thing. I would change my plans just to watch the cubs game on tv if I had the chance to, but now I don't care as much. If I have things to do I wont put them off or change my scheduling just to see a game on tv. I'm done with that.

There's a sort of freedom and comfort in knowing they stink ahnd are loafing through the year; I won't get my hopes up. Its when they are on the cusp of something great that you hurt the worst.

As such, the 03' NLCS takes the cake, IMO. I was at Shea Stadium for all 3 games in September last year; I witnessed the melt down. As upset as I was, the memory of Game 6 in 03' hurts more. I am driven nearly to tears when its replayed on t.v.
