Thought this was interesting...

Ken Griffey Jr. is out of the lineup today against the Padres.

Even though GM Dan O'Brien keeps saying he's not trading an outfielder, there's been some speculation today about Griffey to the Cubs. Griffey is 13-for-31 with five homers against Woody Williams in his career, so this would be odd timing for a routine day off. Jul. 31 - 3:12 pm et

As long as we are not giving up much and the Reds are picking up a lot of deferred salary, then I guess I'm ok with it.

If there's a way to make his contract look better I could see Grifffey heating up for a playoff drive.

Griffey's OPS is over .900 this year. He gets on base. He's been healthy. He would be a pretty good pickup and it wouldn't take too much depending on how the Cubs are willing to take of his salary.

It really depends on how much Cincy is eating. He's definitely an improvement in LF.

That begs the question, what position does he play? I suppose that depends on who was dealt to get him, but I could see Griffey going to CF and our LF situation staying as is.

I'm betting that Hendry only does a deal for Griffey if it means it makes it less costly to also acquire Dunn or Kearns in the deal.

Maybe that's just what I'm hoping for anyway.

If we get Griffey AND Dunn, I will be insanely giddy.

Nice!! Get Cincy to pick up the deferred money and I'm cool.

I am 99.9% sure that all deferred money is to be paid by the team that the player signs the contract with.

It depends on how the two trading teams work out the arrangements.

Well, Unless something really really crazy is going on in which the deal has been agreed upon and for whatever reason selig has yet to approve it... i think this deal is dead.

That being said, I forsee alot of waiver moves this year.

Griffey is a guy who would make it through waivers, because of his large contract. I sure would love to see the Cubs get him, however, I think the Cubs are done with deals for the season.

Griffey could get through waivers, but could the players being sent to Cincy get through?

Exactly. I doubt whoever we send them would get through.

The old PTBNL could cover that little speedbump.

Oooh Oooh...wait, thats true. But, wouldnt the player still have to clear waivers whenever he is announced?

but hendry will know very soon who he can use to trade with, doesn't every GM pretty much put every player on the waiver tomorrow?

Good question. But Cincy could certainly wait until the offseason to make the selection. The Reds would likely be seeking prospects. They need help next season, not now.
