The Cardinals continue to work on a deal for an outfielder. The latest discussions involve Brian Giles coming to the Cardinals in return for Jason Marquis. That part would be easy enough, so if this deal gets held up, it will be over minor details of money and additional prospects.

please god no

So would Reyes replace Marquis in the rotation? SD and STL seem to have a decent working relationship(Woody Williams).

i would imagine this would be the case. if giles is available, why wouldn't the cubs be going after him? he's been one of the top 5 or 6 most productive outfielders in the NL this year, and he's always posted ridiculous numbers at wrigley field. i wouldn't mind even signing him to an extension after the season is over.

if the cardinals get him, i think it puts them over the top.

But of course the Cardinals will acquire Giles! Hey, didn't you know Garciapparra, Williamson and Wood are going to return from the DL Friday? That's the equivalent of trade for a Giles.

The Cards always seem to make the right trade or signing..........

They have a really good GM and manager.

their manager isn't good, let alone "really good."

I kind of don't understand why San Diego would trade Giles. They already traded Nevin, lost Hernandez to surgery and have Peavy, Williams, Lawrence, Eaton, Astacio and Park for the rotation.

They need offense, not pitching.

Uh...no, cause I seriously doubt they would want Marquis, considering they already unloading his twin (Tim Redding) on the Yanks. ANY discussions for Giles would start off with Anythony Reyes, and Hawksworth or Wainworth. Book it.

In other words, don't expect the Cards land any BIG name OFer.

Are Hawksworth and Wainworth related? And is Anythony Reyes related to Everythony Reyes? Just wondering...

Marquis is far better than Redding.

I've read elsewhere that Jocketty doesn't want to subtract anyone from the current ML roster, meaning that he doesn't want to move Marquis, at least during the season.

I've seen this Giles rumor elsewhere, but I would be really surprised if it happened, and if it did happen, if it involved Marquis.

Another reason this trade would surprise me is that Giles is 34. If we are going to give up young pitching we should be getting youth in return. Not a 34 year old making over 8 million this season.

we should trade for marquis and start him in left

No, no.. Ankiel...

Hey, he's hitting .270 with a .363 OBP a .522 SLG and 11 HRs in 178 at bats.

Not bad for a pitcher.

Giles for Marquis?

If the Padres are even considering that, Hendry has to be on the phone offering Mitre...

But why on earth would the Padres be considering that? They'd have effectively traded Giles, Chick and Germano for Randa and Marquis.

Giles is better offensively than Randa, Germano is probably about as good as Marquis long-term, and Chick is a decent prospect. Makes no sense whatsoever.

I dislike LaRussa as much as anyone, but can't argue with his results too much. The Cubs use injury as an excuse, his team succeeds in spite of injury and always plays hard.

As far as them still being in the playoff chase as well as every team West of the Rockies in that division, I can't understand why they'd trade him. But, if they want to get more in return for Giles than compensation draft picks if they lose him as a FA, then they should trade him and get a couple of prospects or what ever it takes.

This would be an awful trade for SD. They are in need of offense. Giles is an all around quality player, they have no one to replace him (Robert Fick and Dave Roberts?), and aside from that he is a native San Diegan /town favorite.

Problem with this line of thinking is the Cubs still need a left fielder.
