Victor (Chicago): Jerry, could you please answer this Cub ?Are the Chicago Cubs about to get Alfonso Soriano and are they inquiring about bullpen help?

Jerry Crasnick: (12:17 PM ET ) Victor,

Jim Hendry isn't afraid to make big deadline moves, as he showed last year with Nomar. But the Rangers are asking for so much for Soriano, I don't see the Cubs paying the price. Hendry's not going to give up Felix Pie, Rich Hill and a cast of thousands to acquire a guy who'll make $10 million plus next year, then be eligible for free agency.

Hendry wouldn't do that.

I hope Jerry is right.

Yeah if Crasnick is right and that's what Texas is asking for, he's right. There's no way Jim gives that up.

I guarantee if it was the Mets or the Yankees, they would say the deal was about done.

I would love it if Soriano ended up back in pinstripes. Wouldn't that just about put the Texas GM on suicide watch: Trade away potentially the best player ever (A-Rod) for Soriano, then trade Soriano back for far less.

Disclaimer: I'm NOT advocating this...

Something that Hendry could be thinking IF Walker is dealt (to Texas as part of Soriano trade, or somewhere else for BP help) the Cubs may go with a lineup like this:

Hairston CF

Murton LF

Lee 1B

Ramirez 3B

Burnitz RF

Soriano 2B

Neifi SS

Barrett C

Pitcher

That would obviously change if/when Nomar returns. I think Hollandsworth would have to be dealt somewhere for Dusty to consider playing Murton everyday, but I suppose it's not out of the realm of possibility.

I'm also intrigued by JC's suggestion that Soriano could be an option at SS. Though I seriously question how well he'd play there defensively.

I really don't like the idea of shipping off one of our better hitters (Walker), but his OBP might be replaced at the top of the order with Murton.

I believe that the Rangers are asking for Milledge and pitching from the Mets in a deal for Soriano. Milledge is equal or better than Pie so I don't think this is too far off.

How many home runs does one team need??? Aside from his power, Soriano seems like another above average hitter. Granted, we'll take what we can get, but this team already has enough power. We need guys who can get on base and move runners over.

We need guys who can ... move runners over.

we need guys who can waste outs? we've got plenty of those already.

soriano would be an upgrade over hollandsworth for sure. like many people have said, if it doesn't cost much, go for it. if the name pie is involved, absolutely not.

I have to agree with that. Those home/road splits that have been beat to death scare me. But as long as we dont give up pie/hill then I can survive with it.

Why not just start him at 2nd over walker, or move walker to left field. Soriano is a better 2b then walker, so wouldnt that upgrade our line up?

Because Walker is a very good hitter and they're about equal defensively at 2B.

My guess is that Soriano would be better in LF than Walker.

Does anyone have any clue what prospects have been talked about?

The rumors I heard with the mets were their top 2 pitching prospects and Mike Cameron. So it seems as if the Cubs might have to give up alot to get him.

If that's the kind of talent we have to give up, then in the immortal words of my favorite southern waitress from Mel's diner; "kiss my grits".

The Score is reporting that the Rangers are likely asking for Pie. If that's the case - Call Theo. In fact, call him anyway.

I don't know if calling Theo is a good idea either. Either the Score or ESPN radio (I don't even know which one I was listening to at lunch) said there is no way we'd get Manny for anything less than Pie, Hill, and a major league hitter. That's a lot to ask for.

Call me crazy, but I don't see Jim pulling off either of these moves right now. And if by some chance he does give up Pie and Hill, we should burn his house down.

Baseball Prospectus says cubs may be in 3-way trade with mets and rangers and they woudl get Floyd from the mets.

That would be alright with me. Hendry is good at pulling off these multi- team deals and fleecing everyone. We got Nomar last year for pennies. I know it doesn't seem like much now, but it was still pretty impressive.

From BP (and the rumor above)...

"Friend of BP Bruce Miles has a couple interesting notes in his latest column at the Arlington Daily Herald."

Yet another reason to like Bruce Miles!
