I've got a good buddy (sox fan) who occasionally posts at the supposedly "premier" white sox message board consisting of intelligent posters, Soxtalk.

I just took a browse over there, and there's at least 4 current topics regarding the Cubs. My questions is - Why are they SO obsessed with the Cubs? You'd think with the season that they're having that they could move beyond this, but they can't! I'm sorry, but I can't comprehend this!! :?

I think you missed his... which is... who cares about stupid Sox fans. Don't pay attention to them.

Thanks for the help guys!! I was only looking for a couple rational opinions as to why this occurs.....

Apparently it's perfectly fine to post a white sox/hate thread on here - that gets filled up with TWO pages of opinions....but when I ask a polite, logical queston I get blasted for it.

I don't think you're getting blasted, I just think the Cubs fans on here could care less about the Sox/Sox fans, even if they seem very concerned about us.

Apparently the Cubs fans on here do care to a certain extent, as there is currently a 2 page thread regarding the hatred towards white sox fans.

I was just attempting to get some further insight in regards to the matter. I don't pay attention to them at all - frankly, I could care less. But I thought this would be an interesting subject matter, and apparently it's not.

We can just go back to discussing how we should trade one of the best hitters on our team (Walker), the classless cubs fans that boo latroy hawkins, and continue a 70 page thread started by a troll for acquiring Dunn.

Sox fans obsess because they are always second fiddle. They will always get less media coverage because their fan base is significantly lower, yet some don't recognize this as the reason. This causes them to be angry at the Cubs and look for ways in which the team, the fans, the ballpark, and the media that covers them screws up

Thank you for an educated opinion. I truly appreciated it!!

It didn't have to be this difficult.....

You didn't need to "push" us to respond how you wanted us to. That's the flow of the board, you will get a couple of light hearted responses but eventually you will get what you are looking for.

Anyways, like CPatterson said, Sox fans are second class and mostly jealous of the attention we get. Even when they are winning, they seem to take just as much pride in a Cubs loss as a White Sox win. More power to 'em.

don't flatter yourselves. The Sox are so far ahead in their division that the games have little meaning or importance anymore. So they need something to talk about, and you're it.

Unfortunately, this isn't something that just popped up this year. For many Sox fans, it's a state of mind. Take a look at a typical Sox fan site, and see how many anti-Cubs screennames, avatars, icons, or sigs there are. Then take a look at a Cubs fan site, and compare.

Exactly....

Something else that I find odd.....the numerous tee shirts advertising the "suck" factor for the cubs - distributed by both Cardinal and White Sox merchants. Yet, I've never seen a Cubs shirt knocking another team (not saying they don't exist, but by no means do they exist in a realm even remotely close to the magnitude of the Cub bashing shirts). The Cardinals have many shirts claiming - Cubs suck - "Cursed" - etc. The White Sox have the ever-so-clever whte sox peeing on a cub advertisement, as well as endorising the cubs suck shirts too.

Just go to ebay and type in Cubs and you'll find a plethora of shirts being sold degrading the Cubs, yet none for the opposite. Also, how many websites are out there that are soley devoted to Cub trashing?

The most ironic thing I find about the "cursed" shirts, which you can find in large quantities by taking a gander around Busch Stadium, is that from a relatively small distance, it just looks like a Cubs shirt.....fools!!

I grew up down south and speak from experience. Sox fans are insecure with a classic inferiority complex. They attempt to build up their low self-steem by putting down the Cubs and their fans. It's as simple as that.

Well said. I hate the Sox b/c of their fans. I'm going to their game on August 15 against the Twins to root for the Twins. Front-row blecher seats!!

Nolan, I see lots of White Sox Suck shirts being sold around Wrigley, but as you said not in the magnitude as you would see at the Cell

Gotcha!! I don't get the chance to go to wrigely more than 2-3 times a year....so I wasn't able to say for certain if there were shirts from "our side" knocking other teams - and Wrigley would be the place to find them.

Ebay is what gets to me the most, though.....just type in cubs on eBay and every 20 auctions or so is a "cubs suck" shirt, navel ring, beer koozie, etc......

Scouring facebook for U of I. Roughly half of the members of the group White Sox Nation (The biggest White Sox group I believe) are in the group Cubs suck. That's not accounting for the myriad of other anti-cubs groups.

The biggest Cubs group "Cubbies" has 3000+ members. The biggest anti-white sox group has 161 members.

Since I'm a Cub fan from Louisiana, I never had any hatred for the Sox at all. In fact, I used to be a pretty big Frank Thomas fan. I was amazed at his ability back in the early-mid nineties. One of the most disciplined hitters I've ever seen. I never hated the Sox until I encountered a few Sox fans who rather than wanting to talk baseball in general had to constantly try to take jabs at me for being a Cub fan or bring negative smack about the Cubs into every conversation. After much of that, I've developed a healthy dislike for the Sox. Had I never met a Sox fan, I might actually root for them every once in awhile.

well i won't speak for Sox fans, but one of the things that irritates a lot of fans about the Cubs is the ridiculous amount of press and attention they get for basicly nothing more than losing spectacularly. I mean, other than the fact that you have a big fan base and an old ballpark, what's so great about the Cubs as a franchise?

They have a huge fan base, that's why they get the media attention. They are the dominant base in one of the biggest cities in the US, and they have a national TV audience for half their games. It's a simple matter of coverage in proportion to the people who care about that coverage.

How about the fact that we have an uncountable amount of fans, potentially more than any other team in baseball. Also, let's attribute the devotion factor to a team destined for losing year in and year out. or Loyalty? Does that mean anything to you?

I guarantee you that if the Cubs were playing Kansas City, there would damn near be a sellout - yet the white sox play them and the stands are STILL empty. Nationwide fanbase. WGN.

You answered your own question when you asked why we get so much press and have such a big fan base.

the cubs are getting less press this year than the sox, despite the larger fanbase

I think the Cubs have a larger nationwide fanbase is simply because America loves the underdog. America, however, does not like whiny, bitchy malcontents hence the nationwide apathy towards the White Sox.
