I am a huge Cubs fan, and have been for many years. I just don't understand why all the hatred has been directed towards Latroy. I actually felt ashamed to be a Cubs fan tonight, watching that game on t.v.

What was Latroy's crime? What has he done to deserve the verbal barage of insults? I know that he played bad for the Cubs, but c'mon - he was brought in as a setup man and ended his Cubs stint as a bad reliever. Did I miss something? Did he do something bad, other than pitch?

Here is Latroy's pitching stats with the Cubs:

2004

5-4 2.63 ERA 25 saes 34 opportunities

2005

1-4 3.32 ERA 4 saves 8 opportunities

So he couldn't close out a game. Many relievers have failed in that spot. Big freakin' deal. He wasn't brought in to close!!!! Needless to say, I feel bad for Latroy. He should never have been treated like this tonight.

I agree.....I cussed him repeatedly when he blew those saves for us - yet no situation ever called for him getting booed like he did with us this year - and especially not tonight or last nite. I felt pathetic being a cubs fan as those ignorant fans were booing him. I felt so bad for Latroy tonight. :(

Like I said before, Cubs fans are the new Red Sox fans.

word.

we had a good discussion about this in flashchat tonight.

My cousin's buddy from college lives on the Northside, and is one of the few Wrigley faithful that seem to think all this anti-LaTroy garbage is just that. Come to think of it, I need to relay this website to him.

Anyways, agreed. I felt bad for LaTroy when he was here, and I still do after tonight. The guy is public enemy #1 in Chicago, just because he couldn't be Smoltz.

No problems with it whatsoever. You hear that kind of stuff all the time in the bleachers. Much worse stuff too.

Didn't feel bad for Hawk at all.

What a bunch of jerks!!! Everything i've read about Latroy Hawkins, suggests that he's a cool guy with a great attitude. He certainly does not deserve this treatment. What the heck ever happened to the "Friendly Confines" of Wrigley Field? :(

Ditto. When a man making a few million cannot perform his job at a satisfactory level and I am one of millions paying his salary by buying tickets, jerseys, etc., I have every right in the world to show my displeasure in him.

Oh yeah I feel sorry for a grown man who plays Baseball for a living and gets paid Millions doing so. Besides I think most of those boos and chants were to get into Hawkin's head, knowing how fragile his psyche is on the mound. I thought it was very knowledgeable on the Cub fans behalf.

Do you boo if you go to a broadway show and are displeased? The whole idea of booing is selfish and dumb. Does anyone think that LaTroy thought "Hey, we lost, but I wasn't bad. Oh wait, the fans are booing, I must've done something wrong." Players know when they screw up, they don't need tens of thousands of their own fans reminding him.

I wish I could go to some people's jobs and boo them. You know, like the Seinfeld episode where he heckled the heckler.

As I've stated previously, give me Latroy's salary and you can come boo me as often as you like at my job.

You know, if I could I would. I dont think anyone here could take the sustained jeers, racial slurs, threats, etc that LaTroy recieved here, and still is apparently.

Racial slurs? Threats? All I heard was 'Hawkins Sucks'. Obviously there is never a justifiable reason for slurs or threats, regardless of the circumstances.

Although the booing did help the Cubs run him out of town and get 2 pretty good prospects in return, so it did serve it's purpose.

I personally have a hard time booing a player on a team I root for, cuz if he does good, I feel like a total hypocrite if I then cheer that player when he succeeds. So I have never booed a player. I take that back. I did boo Todd Hundley, but then again who didn't. However, I also don't have a problem with people who do boo, cuz they did pay for their ticket and they do live in a relatively free society.

I don't know if you work in retail or not, but when you deal with customers on a daily basis, you get yelled at by people all the time.

It comes with part of the territory, so either sack it up, or don't do it.

Let me make this clear: I absolutely agree that threats to family, racial slurs, hate mail, etc is absolutely out of line. But by no means is chanting "Hawkins" remotely threatening. Its a game of psychology used to gain an advantage for your team.

Hawkins sucked here. He doesn't have to apologize for sucking and I don't have to apologize for booing him.

Allowing fans to dictate what players stay or go is a very dangerous precedent.

The slurs and threats were mailed to him. I'm not sure if he actually heard any.

Bottomline is Hawkins stunk with the Cubs. If he would've performed, he wouldn't have been booed. You can't realisticaly expect fans who pay hard earned cash to see a game, cheer for a player who CONSISTENTLY and obviously to everyone (except Manager) kept going out there game after game and blow leads and lose games. It's just not realistic.

Tonight that's all you heard, but he recieved far worse while he was here. Like Mark said, you hear much worse things in the bleachers.

I'll just never understand this 'I'm entitled to boo' mentality people have adopted. You boo the opposing team, you don't boo your team. Yes I realize LaTroy is no longer on this team, but this all started when he was here after taking a pay cut to come here. Obviously you're going to be upset/disapointed at some point but turning on the athletes and citing salary as justification is a pretty poor way of handling it, IMO.

Correct. Id be surprised if any of them had the cajones to say it to him in person.
