I don't feel bad for Hawkins. He got paid way more for the one inning he pitched the other night than I'll make all year. Plus he should expect some backlash for his inflamatory remarks about the fans.

The guy I feel bad for is the one who brought his family to see their first ball game and got stuck in the middle of that crap. How do you explain that kind of behavior to a little kid?

Who gives a crap how it affects the millionaires on the field? People need to think about how their actions may affect the person next to them. It won't happen, though. Our society has become way to selfish to think about silly things like respect.

so it's okay if a millionaire gets his (or her's, controversy) feelings hurt, but an entirely different story of "joe schmoe" gets his feelings hurt? that's ridiculous and selfish.

When did I say anything about "Joe Schmoe" getting his feelings hurt? Please point it out or find another reason to disagree with what I posted.

Sorry for labeling "the person next to them" as Joe Schmoe. I guess you can call them Jane Doe or whatever you want. But I got from your post that who cares if the rich ballplayers get their feelings hurt, but we SHOULD be concerned if non-millionaires feelings are hurt. Sorry if I got the wrong idea.

"Again, it isn't the booing that bothered some people, but the escalation to "Hawkins sucks" that seemed to be a bit too much. "

Actually, some vendor was selling "Beltran Sucks" T-shirts for $15. Beltran just laughed and said if the money was for a good cause he'd help make them.

Also, the Astros weren't held hostage. The similiar deal was turned down because the Stros refused to give him a no trade clause which the Mets did. He and his wife wanted stability for 6 years.

Read the Houston Chronicle for this info.

As far Hawkins, he made a lot of classless statements himself, so anyone who thinks booing him was classless, he and the group that did have a lot in common. Pretty much a wash.

Awesome column.

Mariotti, IMO, is a tool. He garners zero respect from me (as if THAT really matters).

IMO, he has no standing to preach as if he is a Cub fan, because he is not! He doesn't know jack.

Mariotti"]Just take your toothpicks, wristbands and perpetual pout and head to a nice, safe broadcast booth somewhere.

Mariotti"]What do Baker, Lee and Dempster --who've spent all of seven seasons among them in Cubdom -- know about the pain of the fans? How dare these newcomers psychoanalyze and belittle people who've suffered with this franchise just as their parents suffered, their grandparents suffered and their great-grandparents suffered. I've always been amazed Cubs fans don't boo a hell of a lot more. Yankees fans booed Derek Jeter last year. Red Sox fans are killing Manny Ramirez, the reigning World Series MVP, for his latest spell of discontent. When a team hasn't won a Series in 97 years, fans should be booing when they're walking through the turnstiles.

Whatever.

Mariotti is a tool - and I think he hates the Cubs - but he was right on the money with this one.

If the crowd was chanting "Edmonds sucks" and we were playing the Cardinals, would this really be that big of an issue?

Umm that's what I was wondering as well.. I mean I was there at Wirlgey during the second Cubs-Sox game and everyone was chanting Paulie Sucks too... like, I'm confused.. what's the difference.

I think a large part of the torment he had to deal with last night was because the fans were restless from the rain delay. Have you ever stayed through a rain delay? The fans that stay to the end of the game, especially at 1 in the morning, are noticeably more crazy. While I agree that you should be able to boo if you want to, I think last night went too far. I think it just snowballed throughout the stadium, and more and more people thought it was acceptable to chant horrible things. It's that whole, "well, they did it first, so it has to be alright if i do it" mentality.

I also don't think you should boo your own team for their performance on the field. The only time you should boo is when they give you a real reason to. Like when someone doesn't run out a grounder, or refuses to move down in the batting order when they obviously need to. When someone doesn't do what they can to help the team win, that's when they should be booed. Poor performance doesn't always mean they aren't trying their best. Slumps happen.

the fans were particularly annoyed because they stopped selling beer half an hour before the game started. a beer drinking crowd at midight is a lot more mellow than one that's half-hungover

Is anyone even paying attention?

No one is trying to take away your "right to boo", we're saying that it makes you look like a jack-ass when you do.

"BOO HAWKINS, YOU SUCK! BOOOOOO! YOU WEREN'T AS GOOD AS I THOUGHT YOU WOULD BE! BOOO!"

It's childish and stupid. But, by all means, go ahead. Just dont get upset when those of us that are made to look like jerks because of your actions don't like it.

I thought of it more as a BOOO HAWKINS, WE KNOW YOU'RE INSECURE AND WILL PITCH TERRIBLY IF YOU FEEL THE PRESSURE (AND WE'RE RIGHT, TOO)

We gave him hell and it worked. It wasn't until dusty started making inexplicable substitutions (gerut instead of holly) that the fans shut up and the rally fell on its face. Again, I don't have any problem with hawkins as a person or a player, but if he's pitching against the cubs and there's some way I can perform mental sabotage on him (without crossing the line), you can be sure I'll do it.

I don't agree with booing, but if people are going to do it they should excercise some brain power when they do it. Booing the players is stupid and pointless, especially with this team. It will not improve anyone's performance, and makes no difference whatsoever. Now if the people who were out there booing and heckling had brain one in their heads, they'd boo Dusty Baker. Boo him mercileesly. Show Hendry that everyone knows that Dusty's managing is hurting the team. LaTroy, Corey...both poor performances can be directly or indirectly attruibuted to Baker's mismanagement.

People are so eager to boo, but they are booing the wrong people. Lambasting Baker may make some kind of difference. Booing the players will never have any positive effect.

How do you know that all the times Hawkins came into the game it wasn't also directed at Dusty Baker?

Did you poll the Wrigley fans booing to get an accurate assessment on this? I'm guessing no. I booed Hawkins, but my venom also lied with Baker for bringing in a guy who was likely to lose us the game.

This brings up a problem I don't often see addressed here: how do you boo a manager?

usually if you try it will look/sound like you're booing the players involved in his decisions. The only way to effectively boo a manager I can think of is doing it while holding signs, and you'd need a significant % of the fans in the park to be holding anti-dusty signs for that to work. Not going to happen.

although, for the record, everyone I heard actually talking about the game on weds was bashing dusty. He'srapidly running out of time here

The really sad part is that we are quickly becoming like Red Sox fans. They scream "Yankees suck" at every home game (no matter who they are playing) and boo the stuffing out of their guys for minor infractions. If Pedro ever pitches there again, he'll be booed, which is ridiculous.

Hawk deserved to be booed, I agree. But "Hawk sucks" was over the top and no what Cubs fans are about.
