Per ESPN 1000 and Bruce Levine, Kerry Wood has been put on the 15 day DL and will work out of the bullpen when he returns. This definitely could fuel Hoops idea of the Cubs trading for a starter (depending on Hill's sucess).

I think a lot hinges on Hill's start tonight. If he does well, the Cubs may feel he'll do alright in our rotation. If not, maybe we will trade for a starter, but who's really available out there?

the last thing we need is another injury prone pitcher.

Name coming up on Rotoworld is Jason Schmidt, if he's avaliable.

The guy we're facing tonight.

I don't think pitching on consecutive days is going to make Kerry's shoulder problems go away. Making him a reliever won't cure his health problems.

I really hope we don't overpay for a Burnett or Schmidt...

IMO, Burnett will be easier to obtain because Florida just cant demand that much because they know they're going to lose him in FA anyway. On the other hand, so many teams are in the bidding that the price will surely be driven up.

I dont want Schmidt, I think hes on the downside of things and from what I am hearing, it will take a lot of guys to get him since San Fran would rather have him around next year for Barry's return.

In all this Burnett talk, it's going unnoticed that the Cubs are...SENDING WOOD TO THE BULLPEN!

And, per the above link, he's going to the minors first, which is awesome, the right way to do it, and not how the Cubs have handled their big stars recently.

If Wood can't start, and he can't hurt himself in the pen, put him in the pen. I bet he's going to be AWESOME! The guy is a gamer - he'll adapt. Add Williamson to the mix and we're going to have a great 7,8,9 combo!

Burnett is looking for a long term deal - it is likely he wont be traded this year.

Burnett is not going to get a long term contract with Florida, which is exactly why he will likely be traded this year.

To get Burnett I'm guessing we'd have to take on Lowell and some part of his contract - with Aramis being Aramis at 3rd, what would you do with Lowell?

If you've been following the trade talks and rumors, you'd know that teams haven't expressed that much of an interest in signing Burnett long term at this point in the year - and everywhere I read it states the chances of him staying put in Florida for the remainder of the season is growing more and more likely by the minute.

Florida can try all they want to get rid of him - but it just isnt working out for them. I'm sure they would much rather get something for him now than let him go to FA, but so far the only team that is even still considering him is the White Sox, and I doubt they pull the trigger.

They can just get rid of him, they'll just have to takes less in return. Burnett can want a long term contract all he wants, but as far as I know he has no trade rights. If a team wants him for the remainder of the season, and the Marlins will take a rental price, I fail to see what Burnett's contract desires have to do with anything.

I'm not gonna argue with you - we're both only speculating, as neither one of us run the Marlins organization. Also, I stated Burnett was looking for long term above instead of short term. Apparently he does have a say in the matter.

"A.J. Burnett may not be going anywhere after all.

He's very reluctant to sign a long-term deal with anyone since he's so close to free agency. However, most teams are only going to want him if they know he'll be around for a few years, so he may just stay put and then see what he can get in this winter." rotoworld 7.25.05

Gee what a surprise. Shut this guy down and don't let him break this team's heart again this year. Just fix his arm, his head, whatever it is and hope he can pitch well enough in spring training to warrant a trade.

Time to get Schmidt. The Cubs pitching just doesn't look too hot right now.

Doesn't ANYONE realize that Schmidt's velocity is way down? HE'S PITCHING HURT, it would seem, he is the LAST thing we need. Especially so when you consider what it'd take to acquire him.

How hard is he throwing tonight? I can't get the game.

*sigh*

I dont like the idea of wood in teh pen.

The other way isn't working. Either stick him in the pen the rest of this year or shut him down, IMO. Personally, I have higher hopes for a contribution from Scott Williamson than from Kerry Wood for the rest of this season.

I agree. I'm hoping Williamson provides that crucial spark in the bullpen. I wouldn't even count on Wood at all this year. Hendry must consider the team without him and determine if we need to make any moves. Even if Wood returns as a relief pitcher, I don't see him being effective since he tends to get hit hard early in games... Oh well, I just hope he comes out of this healthy and uses the offseason to work on his legs and tweak his delivery. Perhaps a steady diet of Clemens and Ryan tapes are in order.

yeah, he keeps getting hurt because he's not mentally willing his labrum not to fray. that's definitely it.

matter of fact, the coaching staff told him a way to throw that would make him 100% healthy and the most dominating pitcher in mlb, but he said, 'no way, suckers. you guys are stupid, and i'll do things how i want.'

that was right after the cubs told patterson how to turn into willie mays, but he ignored them and then went out to not sign autographs for little kids and swing at high fastballs.

LMAO...hilarious abuck...and dead on. I love how ANY problem our players have nowadays is automatically a psychological issue and they need time to "straighten out" or "get their head on straight"....it'd be completely far-fetched to believe that a player may have a true problem he has NO CONTROL over...

Very clever.

I keep reading that his mechanics are a problem.

Posted

It makes no sense to throw a guy out there who has labrum problems for bullpen duty so that he can shred his elbow and his shoulder while overthrowing everything. I mean, there's a ton of potential there that he could very well destroy his arm if it's overused. Wood should just throw the towel in, get his shoulder scoped, and find some one in the offseason to work on his mechanics with. A bullpen jaunt could be career suicide for Wood. A frayed labrum will only get worse with more wear and tear.

I'm convinced this is posturing by Hendry. If he has Wood in the bullpen, it will make his need for relievers seem less than what it really is. If he came out and said Wood was being shut down for the season, some one like, say, Chuck Lamar might bump up the asking price for Baez to be traded to the Cubs. The same could potentially be said for starting pitching if it turns out that Wood might not be fully recovered from this thing until some time next season (as you remember, Matt Morris had plenty of issues last season despite getting the surgery).

The timing of this injury could not have been worse for Hendry, imo. I predict that, following the deadline, Wood throws some side sessions, mysteriously feels really bad pain, and is shut down for the rest of the season to get surgery.
