Gee what a surprise. Shut this guy down and don't let him break this team's heart again this year. Just fix his arm, his head, whatever it is and hope he can pitch well enough in spring training to warrant a trade.

Time to get Schmidt. The Cubs pitching just doesn't look too hot right now.

yeah, he keeps getting hurt because he's not mentally willing his labrum not to fray. that's definitely it.

matter of fact, the coaching staff told him a way to throw that would make him 100% healthy and the most dominating pitcher in mlb, but he said, 'no way, suckers. you guys are stupid, and i'll do things how i want.'

that was right after the cubs told patterson how to turn into willie mays, but he ignored them and then went out to not sign autographs for little kids and swing at high fastballs.

Very clever.

I keep reading that his mechanics are a problem.

and you somehow know that it is a problem that someone has the answer to, but that wood refuses to change?

I like this move. Not because I think that Wood will be effective from the 'pen (I don't... I agree with others that Williamson is going to provide more for the 'pen than Wood), but because this team and fans now no longer can hold out hope that Wood will be OK and come back to his 2003 form and dominate and help carry us to the playoffs. They now know they have to get it done without him.

If he came out and said Wood was being shut down for the season, some one like, say, Chuck Lamar might bump up the asking price for Baez to be traded to the Cubs.

I've never understood this line of thinking. How is another team's supposed desperation going to change what I think my guy is worth and what I'm going to ask in exchange for him?

It's called supply and demand... this detemines the relative value of a player and therefore the asking price. The Cubs having one more reliever with good stuff (whether Wood will or won't is another discussion), at least from the outside looks to decrease their demand... thus lowering the asking price. The reverse would be true if the Cubs were obviously short of a 'pen help.

Wood and Williamson aren't locks - I'd sure like to see Hendry do the near impossible and bring in a good reliever at a fair price.

Who's locked up long term after this year in the pen anyway? Most everyone is a kid.

Rusch - affordable for next year

Remmy - gone

Demp - he'll get a good sized contract

Novoa, Mitre, Welly, Wuertz - youngsters with cheap production, plus Aardsma in the minors, Angel Guzman is a remote possibility.

Seems like we can and should go out and get a reliever who makes $2-3 mil and will produce for a few years. If Williamson and Wood pitch like they're capable of, add another good reliever along with Demp and we could have an awesome pen.

And with Wood not starting, that makes our starting corps weaker, that puts more pressure on our pen. Strengthening the pen is just as important as that real OFer.

It may affect the ultimate price that Hendry pays, but it should have zero effect on the asking price.

So, i havent read much about this...

Is wood going to be in the pen for the rest of this year, adn then return to the rotation next year?

I'd hate to have a twelve million dollar releiver. I still really dont like this idea. *sigh*.

I believe it is just for the rest of the season so that he can help the club anyway he can. He will have surgery after the season to clean out his shoulder and then be ready to return to the rotation next year.

that's what the cubs thought they were doing when they signed remlinger and hawkins. neither of those signings worked out very well. relievers' (especially 7th-8th inning guys) performance just vary too much from year to year for anybody to be a sure thing. i'm not saying the cubs shouldn't ever sign a guy like that again, but there's a decent chance that it will end up backfiring.

Very true. But if Hendry has to give up money/prospects to get a proven reliever we sure could use another one this year and beyond.

Give him a bat. Or there's always the used car business.

That's the thing. There's no such thing as a proven (which would imply reliable and sure) reliever. Releif pitchers are a crap-shoot.
