  1. Hey everyone, Just wondering if there are any horse racing fans here who are interested in the Breeder's Cup. Horse racing is 5th on my list behind the Cubs, Bulls, Bears, and Blackhawks, but it's also one of my favorite singular sports events of the year. Anyway, thought I'd see if anyone else was interested. I'd love to get a little discussion going. Every year I try and preview as many races as I have time for, feel free to check it out if you'd like: http://horzing.blogspot.com/ Anyone have any favorites for the weekend so far?
  2. The idea that the Cubs should have given Kerry a big dollar multiyear contract just because of the emotional attachment or that is wouldn't have been a bad idea is patently ludicrous. They let Kerry go because giving him a multiyear deal @ 10 million+ would have been moronic, a far poorer decision than any of the recent poor decisions. It isn't a move you make with a payroll of zero. I have been one of Wood's biggest fans for his entire Cubs tenure, but honestly, the lack of objectivity over this is mind boggling. I agree completely.
  3. Then state it as the deal is: Gregg for Ceda + Wood and a 4 year guaranteed high dollar contract. Unless saving 7-10 million per year on Wood frees up payroll to trade for someone like Peavy or a solid bat.
  4. I listen all the time as well and never recall anything more than a pitch being missed. Hughes does his fair share of joking around/story telling but is always on point and is, in my opinion, the best play-by-play guy around. And as far as Ron goes, I love him. I think the yelling, grunting, and pure emotion is great. Besides, whenever he does any of those things, I'm doing it right along with him. If the Cubs hit a go ahead homerun in the bottom of the eighth there is no way I'm listening to the color guy break down the pitch, the swing, or the ballpark conditions; I'm yelling and, if possible, jumping up and down. If I want to break down the at-bat, I'll check out a replay a couple hours later after I've calmed down. In the moment, nothing beats a Pat Hughes and Ron Santo call.
  5. Anybody have any idea when postseason tickets go on sale? Or is that completely dependent on when the playoff seeding is set in stone?
  6. After yesterday, we need a long reliever in case/for when Marquis gets pounded? Thats my best guess.
  7. It's in this one at about 2:40, it's pretty absurd. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtZd2koUMrk
  8. At this point, I think it would be a pretty big shocker if the Bulls didn't take Rose. With that said, I think you absolutely have to at least inquire about getting the 2nd pick if the Heat are as willing to trade it as they appear. Offer Hinrich, Thomas, and our first pick next year for the 2nd pick and Mark Blount (bad contract). It might not/probably won't be enough, but if there is anyway you can get Rose and Beasley out of this draft you have to give it a shot.
  9. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/basketball/bulls/cs-080619-derrick-rose-chicago-bulls,1,3683945.story No workout scheduled with Miami yet??? That accompanied by the rest of this article certainly makes it sound like D. Rose is the pick.
  10. So has anybody heard which way Collins leans on the Rose vs. Beasley debate? Or, is that going to be 100% Pax's call?
  11. Anybody pick up Ali Highsmith yet? I know he had a terrible combine, but to go undrafted???? I'd like to see the Bears take a flyer on him.
  12. Unfortunately I don't have access to the streets of Dallas at this point in time. I guess I'll just have to trust him. Thanks for advice guys, I'll stand pat with what I've got.
  13. Thanks for the input guys. As it turns out, I do have a pretty big hole at 3B and might have to make this trade even though I'm wary of either Hamilton or Hermida having a break out year. With Kemp struggling though I'm worried my outfield could look pretty weak following the trade as well. I'm really 50-50 on this one. Here is my current lineup: Note- This is a 17 team league. C Russell Martin 1B Nick Swisher 2B Kelly Johnson 3B Joe Crede SS Hanley Ramirez OF Josh Hamilton OF Matt Kemp OF Rick Ankiel Util Kevin Youkilis Bench: Jeremy Hermida and Evan Longoria SP Brandon Webb SP John Smoltz SP Ben Sheets RP Troy Percival RP Brian Wilson P Jhonny Cueto
  14. Hey guys, what do think of this trade disregarding any kind of team needs that are involved? I get: Atkins and McLouth I give: Hamilton and Hermida Thanks for the input.
  15. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/spring2008/news/story?id=3294343 I'm just going to go ahead and assume it was Cesar Izturis, even if he's on the Cardinals.
  16. Got 2 bleacher tickets for the Philly game on 8/23. Ughhhh, $150.00. ****.
  17. Try this: http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/chc/ticketing/bullpen_dugout.jsp?affiliateID=edCHCbulldug031308
  18. Yeah, I can't seem to find it either...
  19. I think I'm going to give it a go. Are these seats available for every game or are they for selected games?
  20. Here's mine, I'm pretty happy with it, stiil some work to do. What do you guys think? C Victor Martinez 1B Paul Konerko 2B Robinson Cano SS Derek Jeter 3B Ryan Braun OF Corey Hart OF Matt Kemp OF Shane Victorino UTIL Todd Helton Bench: Jay Bruce, Evan Longoria, Rocco Baldelli, J.R. Towles SP Brandon Webb SP Tim Lincecum RP Eric Gagne RP Joakim Soria P Roy Oswalt P Tim Hudson P Bob Howry or Jonathan Broxton
  21. Sir, you are guilty of not watching the games. Soto will win the NL MVP and hit 75 HR's in 2008. No one will steal a base on Geovany Soto unless they know what's good for them. Soto will burn down the house of anyone who even remotely thinks of stealing a base on him. Soto will have a CERA of 1.25. He would make it lower, but he honestly doesn't want "GOD" status in just his rookie season. Is it now time for Geovany Soto jokes a la Chuck Norris? This seems to have some potential, if you ask me. :D When Geovany Soto does pushups, he doesn't push himself up, he pushes the ground down. in reality neither matters. it does not matter which is moving I'm pretty sure pushing down the ground would be a far more impressive feat of strength as the force it would take to push down the ground would undoubtedly exceed the force it takes to do a push up. I could be wrong but, up until Geovanny Soto, I've never heard of anyone that was able to push down the ground.
  22. Don't know if this has been posted anywhere yet: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3192184
  23. The Padres have made an offer to Fukudome, calling it "one of the two or three biggest offers" in team history. Does anyone recall any significant Padre contracts in recent history? Or, could an offer of 4 years 40 million fit into the category of "one of the two or three biggest offers" in team history?
  24. Some interesting stuff... from the Insider chat.... Bill (Chi-Town): Any chance the Cubs could package Marmol, Pie and Hill for Sanatana? Would the Twins bite at such an offer? Jim Callis: (2:15 PM ET ) The Cubs could package that, though I think they'd like Marmol to be their closer in 2008. Twins would probably consider it, but they'd probably want a little more. That's not a bad start, though. Rob (Chicago, IL): What's your take on Pie? He's brilliant in AAA but can't find the ball at the major league level. What do you foresee in his future? Jim Callis: (2:22 PM ET ) Well, he never has played close to regularly for an extended period of time in the majors. I like Pie, not as much as some, but he's unquestionably talented. Still needs to polish his tools into skills, but he's still young. I think he'll be at least a solid regular in time. Willie (Philly): True or False, young controlable cheap players are the most sought after players in baseball today. Jim Callis: (2:25 PM ET ) True. Well, that and good pitching of any age. Frank (Chicago): Jim, any insight into Geovanny Soto? Fluke year, or legit skill set and our starting catcher next year? Jim Callis: (2:33 PM ET ) I don't think he's .350 AVG/.650 SLG good, but it's not a total fluke. I think you're looking at a potential .280/20 HR catcher with good defensive skills. He will start for the Cubs next year. Andrew (Indianapolis): Marmol or Howry for Closer in 2008? Jim Callis: (2:45 PM ET ) Marmol. Jason (Philly): Who is the best future hitter in this years draft? Wieters? Jim Callis: (2:47 PM ET ) Mike Moustakas. Jon (DC): Moustakas over Vitters?? Jim Callis: (2:48 PM ET ) Yes. Kevin (Manassas): ETA for Vitters, and solid regular or all-star? Jim Callis: (2:49 PM ET ) 2010, all-star. Kevin (Manassas): Rank these three...Veal, Samardzjia, and Gallagher. Jim Callis: (2:50 PM ET ) Gallagher, Veal, Samardzija. Kevin (Manassas): Better future...Colvin or E. Patterson? Jim Callis: (2:51 PM ET ) Colvin. Jason (Philly): Ok, then Wieters or Vitters? Jim Callis: (2:51 PM ET ) Vitters. Dan (Louisville): Ronny Cedeno or Ben Zobrist? Jim Callis: (2:58 PM ET ) Cedeno. Still think there's a small chance he becomes the Cubs' long-term SS.
  25. Any chance at all we could pry Hermida away from Florida? Maybe Murton plus one or two of our young pitchers?
