It was posted by a troll. Perhaps he pulled those names from some other message board, but his intent was to yank everybody's chain.

Is this factual? Cuz, it sounds to me the "rumored" deal was right on according to other sources since the original post.

It's not a totally unfounded rumor - to me that was news. I thought it was totally bogus.

What was totally bogus?

The first post of this thread.

It was posted by a troll. Perhaps he pulled those names from some other message board, but his intent was to yank everybody's chain.

Well he did pretty well - they were talking about it on the Reds broadcast.

Perhaps he was right. Perhaps the mods made a mistake and jumped the gun. You mods are fair tho from my experiences - if it turns out y'all made a mistake I'm sure you'll rectify it with that poster. It really wouldn't be very fair if y'all didn't in my opinion.

We'll see what Miles says in public about the situation, if anything. McCoy has already gone on the record about it. I imagine that's one of the many perks for someone as accomplished as he is - scoops.

He got scooped by NSBB.

Yeah, didn't this all start with Roast and Vance?

Who me?

I mean with the whole comparisons with Gerut and Lane, Hill and Penn and so on and so forth.

Bruce Miles, who is the only one we've mentioned in this thread that talkes to Jim Hendry (including that old fart Reds announcer) said that this "deal" was made up.

What else is there to say? I mean, obviously ZZ is going to go against the flow, because that's how he gets his kicks, but for the rest of us, I'd think Miles info should be enough.

I, myself am curious as to what got SE banned. If for anything but something blatent or derogatory, I will have to cry Bull! What makes a person with 10,000+ posts more credible than someone with 20? It's not like the majority of the 10k posts were informative to begin with considering most posts are racked up talking about who got a hit or who didnt in a game thread. Smells too much like Elitism to me and it stinks! I hate to say that, considering I've been on this site since it's inception and use it as a bible for info practiacally. I just don't see what was wrong with any of his/her posts (and I too, have been following page by page). But hey, just an observation, not trying to ruffle feathers

Sometimes the mods are privy to info the rest of us are not. In this case, I think they made the right call.

It's funny, you don't act the same way with Dusty. No doubt he is privvy to info you are not yet you have no problem criticizing him.

What does that have to do with this thread?

I just find it hypocritical is all. But no worries.

And I'm sure Dusty gets laid more than me too, huh?

What does that have to do with this thread? Physician heal thyself....

Yeah dude, remember this one?

It must really rankle you Dusty Busters that Dusty Baker is more successful than you'll ever be. He's better paid, more well-liked, probably had more and better gals then you, and when it's all said and done and it's in the history books he will be remembered as a good manager. And no one will remember you.

And on top of this, he's ruining your Cubs. And he'll probably finish out his contract - your protests are going to go totally unheeded. la (laugh aloud), it's such a waste of energy!

It's kinda sad, when I put it in these real life terms, isn't it? I feel for you.

Me, I give Dusty credit when it's due, like with Neifi today, and I'd rather elevate than denigrate anyway, makes me happier. To point out every little flaw doesn't do it for me either.

What it comes down to for me, is that when y'all can't even give credit to the guy when a move he makes turns out well, that's just sad.

Lets disect the post:

OK, I have something to report regarding the Cubs and Reds working out a possible deal for Adam Dunn. Before I post it, I just want to say that yes, I am a new poster here and this is my first post, and I know how a lot of times you will see people come on boards across the internet and report a false news item in order to get people's hopes up and then have a laugh at it. This is NOT my intention at all.

So basically trying to make himself seem genuine in order to get people to actually believe his post. Even if he is a troll, wouldn't he put a disclaimer up to protect himself because he knows we are all smart enough to not take everyone at their word?

I've been on the ESPN and Cubs.com boards and I know how annoying trolls can be when they do that kind of stuff...I would NEVER do that.

Yet he only produced one name that he used at ESPN, and he said he only "lurked there" and barely posted.

I have a friend who works for the Cincinnati Reds. This guy isn't exactly a high-ranking official for the Reds or anything like that

Who is he? The janitor? The assistant to the traveling secertary? How does someone other then a high-ranking official know about a trade that hasn't even been completed? Did they send out a memo to all the employees that they were about to trade their marquee name to the team they are in the middle of playing?

and I might add that he has been right on a few of the Reds moves in the past. He told me Austin Kearns would be demoted a few hours before it became official, and also knew about the Reds inking Joe Randa to a contact a day before that happened, so I consider him very reliable..

Doesn't his friend have anything better to do then find out transactions a mere hours before they are revealed and tell them to supposed Cubs fans? "Hey man, I know you are a Cubs fan and all, but I figured I'd let you know that THE joe randa is signing with the reds. I figured you should know a few hours before you read it as a blurb at the bottom of the daily transactions page.

he hasn't been wrong yet. I talked to him a couple hours ago, and I am so pumped because of what he told me, I could hardly believe it. He says he has heard that there is a deal between the Reds and Cubs that should be completed and should become official within the next 48 hours.

again, a low ranking official is giving 48 hour notice about a trade, and violates a confidentiality agreement I'm sure he signed before working, to tell his Cub fan friend so that he could post it all over the internet

Here is what the deal will be:

The Cubs get: Adam Dunn

The Reds get: Corey Patterson, Rich Hill, Sergio Mitre

Again, I know some people might not believe this since I'm a new poster, but I would NEVER make anything up like this, I just don't troll. If I end up being wrong, the mods can ban me if they feel the need to, but my source said he is certain this will go down, and he hasn't been wrong before, so there's no doubt in my mind it'll happen.

Sure, you knew you were going to get banned anyways.

C'mon guys, I understand the excitement, but how can you take a guy at his word and make a 30+ page thread spewing over the possibility of Dunn. I understand what your saying satex, but isnt someone making his first post FAR MORE LIKELY to be feeding us hogwash then someone with 10,000 plus non-bannable posts?

We found evidence outside his posting history that confirmed our original suspicions that he was a troll. It seems pretty obvious to me in hindsight. How many mystery sources turn out to be true? And then his second update gave people exactly what they wanted to hear.

I apologize if I seemed a bit critical of you, Tim and the mods, 1908. Like I said, NSBB is my main source of anything Cubs and y'all do a SUPERB job at making this site what it is (which is why I've been around so long!). It would be interesting to know the facts that made it be known that this person was a troll, using info from Vance's earlier posts stating a deal from his "source" in houston. No discrediting directed at you Vance! You're my new source to last minute tickets at MMP!!! :D

Seriously, we need to drop the whole incident and move on. Bringing it back up again when you know ZZs opinion (and his conviction in sticking with it) is just as rabble rousing if not more than the whole labelling issue in the first place.

He could have been "trying to make himself seem genuine" or he could have actually been genuine. There's no real way of knowing which one he was. Granted, there have been trolls like this plenty of times before on msg boards, but just because he was new doesn't mean he was a troll, perhaps he was legit. I don't think we really know for certain.

I'm working at the game and I can't linger, but I can tell you no such deal has been offered or accepted by anybody. The Cubs would not trade Hill straight up for Dunn, let alone offer additional players. This deal is not happening. But it's always fun to speculate.

Nothing is hot at the moment. The Cubs would love Kearns, but they can't find a match. The Reds aren't the easiest team with which to deal, especially within the division. Nothing on Pierre. Everybody's looking for relief help. Hendry's got nothing imminent there. Talk to you guys soon.

Just to recap...

McCoy said it was not straight up Dunn for Hill, but Dunn for Hill, CP and Mitre.

Maybe both were offered. The nature of news is fluid and ever-changing after all.

Posted
All I know, this Adam Dunn "is he or isn't he" situation has GOT to end soon, or I might just go crazy.

Probably. This is similar to the Nomar situation. And I'm fairly certain that Hendry will again wait until the deadline to make a deal, just to worry me as much as possible. Thanks, JH.

Columbus and ZZ give differing accounts. If I've kept it straight, Columbus on TV heard Hendry talk with Brenneman with Hendry saying the price was too steep for the Cubs. ZZ heard on the radio the converse, saying the price was too steep for the Reds. I think I've followed that, basically a bunch of misinformation and he said she said, nothing out of the ordinary given baseball trade talk near the deadline, especially with Hendry.
