Welp... it's a three-way tie for the Wild Card. Cubs have the tiebreaker, but we HAVE to win these games against the Marlins and Reds before traveling to Boston.

Do the Cubs start Happ against the lefty or Taylor?

Happ is 9 for 25 with a HR, 4 RBI, and a 1.010 OPS.

Taylor is 2 for 11 with a HR, 2 RBI, and a .705 OPS.

Maybe Happ does play today. He has hit this pitcher well, and it is in Cincy, where he always hits well. But maybe Taylor plays too.

The Boyd-Cubs losing streak ends tonight.  The walk-a-palooza ends tonight.  The Reds are a bad team however, even bad teams have a chance when you walk the world like Holmes did last night. He had the same issue in the loss to the Marlins.

Off topic but just saw Dbacks released Gurriel, If im Hoyer,  id scoop him up and sign him for next season, if he'll take a 1-2 yr deal with an option. 

I know he had a rough season coming off an injury, but if healthy next season he can be a pretty good RH bat for the OF and or the bench as a 4th OFer.

Definitely worth kicking the tires on, probably not 100%, give him and off season, a low buy.

Even when he was healthy he wasn’t very good. In the last 5 years his best OPS+ is 114. Which is ok, but not great. I mean maybe he makes sense as a platoon bat for a low salary ($3M) but other than that, he doesn’t interest me at all.

Buy low option, couldn't hurt, bench bat, and, as you said, little bit above replacement level, nothing special.  Probably a stronger option to fill out a bench then a Berti or Lopez.

Won’t argue he is better than Lopez or Berti. And maybe if they went with Conforto as a platoon partner he would be fine. But has to be pretty cheap. A right handed platoon bat is the weak side of the platoon. Can’t pay too much. He would be a buy low because even when he was good, buying low was a much as you should buy for. But if they have Shaw, as an example, next year, I would rather play him in left. And he cost less. If they plan on trading either or both of Ramirez or Shaw, then  Gurriel for cheap is ok.

Right,  he would be a buy low.

i just see him as someone that could be a RH platoon/4th OFer that can bridge the gap in the OF until their top OF prospects are ready. (Hartshorn, Conrad, Kepley)

OF picking is supposed to be weak in offseason, if they need to add someone,  he wouldn't be a bad pickup.

I guess he would be ok. But I would be willing to bet you if he started 2-16 you, and some others, would be here criticizing the “cheap ass, Jed Hoyer” for signing him instead of someone else. Probably the same cast of hot take characters who were all over Taylor after 14 AB.
