Meanwhile, Seattle has 4 guys who would be in the argument for the Cubs' best pitcher, Anderson, and another 20-y/o top 50 prospect pitcher tearing up AA to the tune of 11 k/9 with a 7.14 k/bb (Ryan Sloan- who also happens to be from Elmhurst)

He went to my son’s high school (York).

Maybe its time to get rid of Kantrovitz

Easy, they dont have a shutdown starting pitcher, theyre all basically guys you hope to get that QS ( 6ip 3 runs) from and be happy with that..

A bullpen of mostly guys that can't be trusted to get a clean inning from.

Offense that been jeckyll and hyde all season.

They may squeak pass the WC round,  the Division round will be a coin flip cause you dont know what pitching youll get or which offense will show up.

Like I said - they’re elite in many areas. A projected 90+ win team, and are more than capable of beating anyone.

I just never get that feeling of “we are starting (fill in the blank), so he’s going to give us 6-7 innings.” I really hope they can secure that top wild card spot. Their odds would drop considerably having the WC round at Philadelphia or Atlanta/LA.

I know - I’m off the ledge lol - just concerned about the inconsistency in some areas.

Right - we don’t have elite top of the order pitching which is exactly the recipe for October success.  We are not built for the playoffs.

This is just not true. We have a good group of starters who all can pitch a good game. Yes, the Phillies have 3 very good starters, but they don’t have our offense. There is no reason someone like Holmes, Gausman, Boyd, Imanaga and even Brown can’t hold them in check. Their pitchers are better, but they pitch to the Xubs offense. The Cubs pitchers pitch to the Phillies. I don’t remember every WS staff, but being from Chicago, I remember the White Sox staff of ‘05. Who was their lock down starter? They had good starters who pitched well in the playoffs. They won without. Ring built for the playoffs, using your logic.

Something I've noticed a few times recently when PCA has made soft contact, he hasn't run at all.

It looks odd, not something I'm used to seeing from him.  It threw me off once or twice because I thought the ball was foul based on him not even leaving the batters box.

I'm not saying it was going to make any difference for him to run on those particular plays.  They have been as routine as routine gets.  But I'm not used to seeing that out of PCA.

Would you rather have any of our pitchers starting twice in a 7 game series, or Miz?

It absolutely matters having a true shutdown starter or two over guys who could pitch well.

Yep. Take the other 4 big NL contenders and you can make two rotations of guys I'd rather have pitch than any one of ours.

If Peterson pitches a few more clean innings he'll surpass Boyd in the circle of trust

I agree.  Doesn't have to be clean innings, but only a few hit with no ER.  Peterson has been really good, except the leadoff HR.

Peterson is one of the best SP's on the team, since the AS break.  And, Boyd is one of the worst.

I get that. But to say a team isn’t built for the playoffs because they don’t have a top 5 pitcher in baseball emulates a lot of teams. Sure Mis is who I would want starting. But would you rather have the Cubs line up or the Phillies in the playoffs. Last year Skubal won the Cy young. . Detroit lost both games he pitched against Seattle. Suggesting the Cubs can’t win in the playoffs because they aren’t built for the playoffs is an overreach. I know teams have better staffs, but this year we don’t have to do a bullpen day in game 5 of an NLDS.

I don’t think we really disagree much.  “not built for the playoffs“ does seem like a strong statement for a team that has elite qualities.  Still though, this starting pitching staff….it scares the heck out of me facing a playoff caliber team multiple games.  The Cubs have done a really good job getting the most from this group for sure.

Right, it makes a difference in the postseason if you have 1-2 starters you can count on to get you 6-7 innings, compared to guys you hope can go 5.

Main reason is bullpen use, you need to try not to be needing them for 4 innings every game in a series.

I agree. Fact is there are probably only 4 or 5 elite starters. But that doesn’t mean they can’t be beat. Cubs are a very good team and have enough pitching (with their defense) to win any series. Doesn’t mean they will, but they could.
