This is now the 7th best offensive season in Chicago Cubs history with 8.7 fWAR, and the 5th (1958 Ernie) and 6th (1964 Santo) are both also 8.7. After that there's a small gap to 4th (1967 Santo, 9.5), 3rd (1959 Banks, 9.7) and 2nd (2001 Sosa, 9.9), and then an even bigger gap to 1st (1929 Hornsby, .380/.459/.679, 11.0).

On the pitching side, you've got 4 seasons pre-1900 that are measured at over 10 fWAR (all with at least 500 IP), and then 1970 and 1971 Fergie at 9.6 and 9.5, which seems within reach.

Obviously not a true counting stat, can certainly have a rough finish and move backwards, but likely looking at somewhere between the 2nd and 5th best season in post-1900 Cubs history by the time this wraps up.

Every player who has posted 10+ fWAR in a season as a primary centerfielder is either in the Hall of Fame (Mays, Mantle, Cobb, Musial, Speaker) or well on their way (Trout + Judge).

I'd love to see PCA join that elite group.

It was funny, I was trying to explain to my mom, who's an extremely casual Cubs fan, about why PCA is so much better now, and I had to emphasize several times that this kind of stuff flat-out does not happen. Guys don't just double their walk rate overnight. But he did.

PCA's already so good that his career projections are 2340 for hits and 440 for homeruns.  He's 24, and has banked 374 and 74 respectively.  Insanity.

Dan didn't project steals, but I'd presume PCA projects easily to 300/300 and has a decent chance at 400/400?

Rogers Hornsby, Sammy Sosa, Ernie Banks, and Ron Santo each have one season better. That's the whole list.

Do that next year and youre looking at a 15 win season. There is no more interesting story in baseball this year and people need to stop hating and recognize what's really going on. 

 

This tear basically coincides with Craig putting him at leadoff, which seemed like a firable offense at the time. It totally defies comprehension. Now looks like a stroke of genius.

Before May 30th he only had a 91 wRC+ in 58 games coming off a 106 game stretch with a 70 wRC+. It was the height of the PCAAA meme.

How many players have stared a season with a 91 wRC+ over their first 2 months, only to sit at a 158 on the season 136 games in?

Everytime I hear some "expert" suggest "Ohtani fatigue" as a possible contributing factor to PCA winning the MVP, I want to punch them in the face.  PCA is having an objectively better season and it isn't even close.  Anyone who suggests otherwise is attempting to minimize the incredible season that PCA has had, but why?  We all know Ohtani is great, but it's ok to admit that someone else has been better.

Before a couple nights ago I had probably spent about an hour lifetime scrolling X. Then a post popped up on my feed and I decided to check it, and several others, out. Phew - the hatred for Pete is alive and well. I can understand some of the ones who don't like the emotional reactions and questionable sportsmanship and the way he can influence kids by them, But by and large he has a lot of people who completely loathe him and try to downplay his success to massive degrees. 

 

5/23 is when he was instituted in the leadoff spot, so that's the line of demarcation for me. Since that date he has 7.9 fwar and 2nd place has 3.8. He has a 400 PA stretch of a 200 wRC+.

I know this is the PCA isn't human thread, but pulled up that same leaderboard and realized that Seiya was 8th and Bregman was 15th on that list. Which is fun.

Unfortunately for us, Seiya is having his best year ever and that means it's highly unlikely they'll be able to bring him back in free agency. Someone is going to give him like 5/125 or 5/150.
