Heyman: Cubs get Clay Holmes and Tyrone Taylor for Jefferon Rojas

Losing Rojas hurts, but it's fun looking at the top 11 2024 prospects and see that all have either played or were traded for someone who will contribute to this roster.

PCA, Horton, Caissie (traded for Cabrera), Busch, Shaw, Alcantara, Triantos, Ballesteros (traded for Zeferjahn), Wicks, Rojas (traded for Holmes), Brown.

Because Assad has options left I would say it would be Rea in the pen instead of Assad and Milner would be the first man in if one of the injured guys isn’t ready.

I hope Cabrera gets fixed. I don’t trust Shota to start a playoff game.

Holmes' player option isn't honestly that expensive. I wouldn't be upset if he exercises it but conversely I wonder if we like what we see and turn that option into a 2 or 3 year extension instead.

the only trade i wasn't thrilled about esp from value standpoint, but seems it's pretty clear they fall in love with heavy GB tendencies and seeing our IF def who am i to argue

I loved getting Clay Holmes.....but I think getting Tyrone Taylor is being undersold. A guy who can play left or center against LHed pitchers. Be a RH pinch hitter off the bench. He will be a very valuable piece down the stretch

I absolutely trust Shota more than Cabrera. I think late last season with him pitching hurt left a bad taste in everyone's mouths. Shota has been much better than Cabrera overall this season + he's been pitching extremely well lately - Since June 1st, 10 starts 2.81 ERA 3.47 xERA. And one would expect the summer months to be his worst being a fly ball pitcher. He's a fine #4 starter for us in the playoffs, especially if you can line him up at Wrigley in Oct with maybe an assist from cool weather/wind blowing in. With the plethora of SP we have now, maybe they can get him a few extra days rest here and there to ensure he doesn't run out of gas.

You might not have meant this, but just to clarify, it's not the Cubs decision to convert it into a longer extension. There's not a defense in baseball that will serve his skill set better, but he also might be looking to sign one more big contract and so that's less of a concern. 

My general approach on this stuff is that the value of 'being able to negotiate before they're technically free agents' is essentially zero. Taking discounts is very rare, and when it happens, it's usually because of years of goodwill built up.

Agreed but the Cubs should absolutely negotiate and try to get him on a 2-3 year deal IMO. He's just too good of a match with a long track record of keeping that specific skill set in elite status.

Is there a site where you can sort a pitchers whip by the ops of opposing hitters?

I feel like certain hitters and pitchers feast off of weak opponents and wilt against elite competition. I mean everyone is vulnerable to elite opponents, but I wish there was a way to quantify how much so.

Does the looming lockout make a player like Holmes more likely, less likely, or no change in terms of trying to get an extension done before the current CBA expires? 

If we're penciling in Cabrera, Steele, Brown, and I guess Garrett into the rotation next year, we have roughly $100m to spend. Spotrac has Holmes' estimated market value at $23m, so let's just use that. Would leave around $75mish to address the corner OF spots and upgrade over Garrett if we'd prefer him to be a depth 6 man type until proven he can be healthy.

You can sort by opponent baseball reference under splits on a players profile.  There’s also splits versus above and below 500 teams too. I don’t know if it’ll prove anything but it’s an option.

I want to trust Cabrera more. For Shota I’d give him a very quick hook. When he’s off he implodes, which isn’t ideal in a playoff game.
