La Russa rips ESPN for moving Cards' game time

ST. LOUIS -- Tony La Russa is miffed that ESPN moved the St. Louis Cardinals' last game before the All-Star break in San Francisco to a night game. La Russa was so disgruntled Tuesday that he implied he hopes the home-run derby Monday night on ESPN is a dud. "I'm saying this a little bit tongue in cheek: It wouldn't bother me to disrupt that home-run event because ESPN just pulled a clueless move," La Russa said. "I don't know how they can do that. Any team playing on the West Coast, why would you do that? Do you know what time these guys are getting in?"

Let's see...

Flight in late to Detroit, late Sunday/early Monday. Off Monday morning and afternoon and arrive at the ballpark in the evening for the HR derby.

Is there something I'm missing here?

Give the man a pacifier.

Moving the game to a night game means that LaRussa, his coaches, and the Cardinal players going to the all-star game won't arrive in Detroit until 6:00 AM Monday morning. They then have a full day of scheduled workouts and media committments. It's not like they go to sleep and then wake up in time for the Home Run Derby.

Well, LaRussa should've thought about all of that before wanting to go to the World Series

DJAXX,

That's the kind of good humored post I like to see!

I don't think it's a big deal, but anytime someone is a critic of ESPN it's fine with me.

Every morning this week on the way to work I've heard 2 things. NBA draft, and Yankees.

So what? It is a workout for the All-Star game and HR derby!

Who cares, they're not going thru some meaningful workout it'll be a generic walk-thru and media non-sense.

MLB is being overpaid by ESPN to hold Sunday night Baseball, the Cards should feel obligated to honor that commitment for ESPN deciding that would be the matchup most people would likely want to see among the choices.

Who?

Excactly!

Hey Gus, speaking of the draft, I noticed that Darren Brooks didn't make it in. I hope the Bulls take a flyer on him.

Maybe Tony should just give his players the needed days off and leave Pujols at home and let Lee start :D , leave Rolen home and have ARam start :D and leave Edmonds home and let Cabrera or someone else start in the OF :D

I am certain he will sign as undrafted FA with somebody. Word is that the Bulls are indeed very interested....

That would be cool 8) . I would go to see the Bulls just to cheer on Brooks.

I can't believe he wasn't drafted, but I guess he'll have to keep on proving it on the court.

Forget the All-Star game. TLR should rest Pujols, Edmonds and Rolen on the Sunday night game. That would actually help the Cubs and keep them well-rested for the long flight from SFO to Detroit. :)

Look for this to happen.

are you serious? I can't believe you make this out to be a legitimate complaint.

how about this. the Cubs first west coast trip went like this

10 home games - seven day west coast trip - three more at home...without an off day

the Cubs next west coast trip

three in Pitt - three in StL - four in SanFran - seven at home...without an offday

when is the last time you ever heard of a team having a west coast trip without an offday either immediately before or after the trip? when was the last time you saw a trip to the west coast wedged into a road trip to other cities? did we hear Baker complaining about it?

complaining because your players won't be fresh for the off day before the all-star game is about as petty as it gets, and then to wish ill upon a spectacle that has been a very good thing for baseball as his measure of revenge?

that's pretty darned Homer of you, dude.

No, he's too busy saying that white guys can't play in the heat and comparing Corey Patterson to Lou Brock.

But I'm sure there will be plenty of Cub fans complaining about the schedule if they flub that road trip like they probably will.

Yeah I know that's crazy. Corey (despite his performance this year) still has the potential to be far better than the HORRIBLY OVERRATED Brock.

Perfect! Written like a true CardsTalker.

and there's the difference between Cub fans and LaRussa/certain types of Card fans

Cub fans' complaints are legitimate

Brock may be a tad overrated, but Corey has almost no chance of equaling Brock's numbers. Brock had over 3,000 hits, 938 stolen bases (118 in 1974) and was a career .293 hitter.

Corey has 522 hits, about 83 stolen bases, and a batting average somewhere around .250. Only 5 years in the league, but it just ain't gonna happen.

Brock at 25 had a .280 avg, 83 SB, and 32 HR.

Patterson going into this season had a .262 avg, 71 SB, and 57 HR.

They appear pretty similar to me.

Will Patterson be another Lou Brock? It's doubtful, but the comparisons are there.

On another note, how did a thread about LaRussa turn into Baker bashing? Don't we have plenty of those.

Back to point. LaRussa is a hypocritical whiner. He gripes and whines when it suits him. He's a puss.

nothing about Brock up until he was Corey's age indicated those numbers. Brock had about 300 hits and fewer than 25 stolen bases when he was Corey's age.

their careers up until the age Corey is right now, incidentally the same age the Cubs gave up on Brock, are amazingly similar. if one were to use how both started their carrer to predict how the one will do the rest of his career, you very well may predict a duplication.

at 25 Brock, right when Brock was traded, he didn't walk enough, struck out too much, got to everything in the field but often looked dumb when he got there, didn't steal enough for how much speed he had, wasn't as successful at stealing than he should have been and was around 260/305/385/685

not only are their average numbers through that age almost similar, so is the cub fans pressure to give up on the guy, right when he shouldn't be given up on.

Brock turned 25 right about when the Cubs traded him. my numbers were guestimates based on the time he was with the Cubs only. after being traded, he instantly started hitting to raise his career numbers up to Vance's guestimates.

Tony might whine occasionally, but at least he makes some sort of sense, unlike his counterpart on the North Side. I challenge you to bring up one stupid comment made by LaRussa along the lines of Baker's affinity for African American players in the summer and walking clogs the bases.
