Is his swing speed showing decline?

I don't have data, but the eye test says yes. Makes me wonder if there's an oblique or shoulder issue

I did not know this but apparently William Contreras has been playing with a fractured middle finger on his left hand since May 7. Tucker's is on his right ring finger, so both injuries are on their drive hands. Contreras has a 122 since his injury.

I have a feeling Tucker has another injury that hasn't been disclosed. Even bad mechanics brought on by pain or discomfort shouldn't completely neutralize a players power like this.

Is his swing speed showing decline?

Yes it's slightly down. However, it doesn't seem like it's necessarily out of the norm? He was around the same bat speed come the end of last year, too in July. August it's around 1mph lower than even that which is his slowest speed. The graphs make it seem like a sharp decline, but I'm not sure it's as sharp as it seems.

So we know for a fact his finger thing was a grievous injury he managed to gut through and still have success?

I believe the consensus was that the injury occurred on a slide on June 1, but happy to retract if I have that wrong.

I'm not disputing that, I'm saying everyone is assuming the injury was serious and he played through it, when it could have been nothing and it went away after a few days, as his June numbers suggest.

Got it. Think we're on the same page. Most logical explanation to me is that it's generally an injury that will linger but you can still play through as it heals, he obviously didn't struggle right away but as the healing process continued, swelling went down, etc something got thrown off physically, which then spiraled into (over)corrections and approach issues and confidence issues and whatever else got us to here.

But obviously just a guess.

I was at Woodruff’s last start and they pulled him early.  I’m not sure if he’s on a strict pitch count but the Pirates did put up some runs as soon as he left the game.  Could be an opening for us.  I’d like to see Tucker sit for both of these games.

Saving him for us?

Kelly, Tucker and Nico out

Counsell waving the white flag to the Brewers and going to start resting guys more.

Happ and Suzuki will probably sit the second game

Yes Tucker's swing speed has dropped about 1.5 mph since June 1, exactly. when he hurt his finger.

May have affected the launch angle too as 1908 showed that graph which tracks the same timeline.

Calling it right now:

Boyd 7.2 2-hit ball, leaves up 2-0 after Nico error and missed third strike call give Brewers their first scoring opportunity of the day. Keller shuts the door with a nasty slider. Sensing a need to save bullpen arms, Counsell leaves Keller in for the 9th. First two batters hit lazy fly balls then Durbin reaches on a dropped third strike, bunt single gets him to second and miscommunication between Caissie and PCA results in a dropped ball triple that would have ended the game (announcer praise Turang's "hustle out of the box" and draw contrasts to Tucker in "respect of the game").

Game ends on a bloop single, 67 MPH off the bat, by a batter whose OPS is .540 away from Wrigley, but .928 at the Friendly Confines.

Keller's line: 1.1 IP, 2 K's, 0.00 ERA, Takes the loss

How does it benefit Tucker to hide an injury?

He gets to play through it.   He's going to be a free agent and needs as much WAR as possible, even at a trickle is better than benched.

The Cubs may also be hiding it for him to be good dudes and help him out in that way.  They aren't going to snitch to the public about the injury and then turn around and try to convince him to sign here.

I dont think that finger was bothering him that much, especially after the month he had.

I think something else happened to him around the AS break, maybe with that finger getting injured again with a pitch that jammed him or something with that hand to make it worse because it has affected his swing and he hasn't looked the same since the break.

9.0 games back and only 38 games remaining. He’s got to save his bullets for the Wild Card race and we need the healthiest version of Tucker we can get for the home stretch.

He was still hovering around 72 until some point in July, which could be around the AS break, where I feel something else happened to him or that finger/hand .

Yep, get these guys ready for September and hopefully a strong finish into the playoffs with momentum.

I'm honestly not prepared or inclined to give him excuses for this stretch, and if there is an injury it's absolutely on him to be honest about it.

But on the not running to first, there is no inclination on that.  That is inexcusable and there is probably not any other on field action that both disappoints and infuriates me as much as that.

The 9.0 games back didn’t hit me until I actually typed it. ☹️

Rest for these guys has been overdue. The absolute lack of a bench has had such a massive impact on this slump.

Good call, Nico is prone to making errors and is definitely not one the best defensive 2B in the game.
