The whole Suzuki thing seems left over from the offseason when some random speculation had a bunch of fans convinced the Cubs were gonna offload Suzuki for pitching. It was never a realistic idea then and certainly isn't now. 😆

Sorry, didn't mean to imply that it's going to be Murphy/Adley at this point. That's who they were targeting a couple weeks ago when Murphy was thought to be available and there was chatter that Adley was going to be their big swing this TDL. More so was agreeing with you that if we traded a catcher to them, it would be one of Amaya/Kelly as they are looking for an impact catcher for this season/playoff run. (Opposed to a Mo or Reese)

Agreed. Mo isn't a major league catcher yet so he's fun but square peg/round hole, and McGuire has been serviceable but he's a backup catcher.

Amaya looked good but the advanced metrics have him as slightly above average offensively, though he comes with all the team control. Kelly obviously was never going to keep up his April but has basically settled into his xwOBA (.371 wOBA v .361 xwOBA, which is basically as good as anyone not named Raleigh/Will Smith) and he gives them another year to wait on Salas.

AJ Preller has the patience of a toddler.  If that team had a better GM, they would have sucked for 1 year in order to have James Wood, CJ Abrams and Mackenzie Gore for the next 6 or 7.  I mean, mercy.  Jed looks like GM of the year next to that guy

He's wild for sure, but he's also traded for Soto, King, Cease, hit the lottery with the Tatis trade, drafted Merrill, traded for Arraez, signed Machado, traded for Darvish, keeps finding these kids that become top prospects, etc. So he has a lot of wins to go along with the big time prospects he's traded off. Probably World Series champs last season if they win game 5 against the Dodgers?

Just hope Caissie and Wiggins isnt the ask

I'd be shocked if there wasn't another big prospect in that ask.

It'll be the ask, unless we are including someone like Cade. I just don't see a world where we get Gore without it feeling like it hurts in terms of what we give up.

It will be. I think Gore is going to be better than those two combined over the next three years, though, and he would make a really good case for this team being the best in the NL.

Gore would be worth giving up Caissie and Wiggins, and then there would be more to give on top of that, which is ok. The best part about getting Gore would be that Tom isn't here to brag about him being his guy

Seeing on X that Shaw is a guy they want

I can't see how that would be even remotely feasible given there is no one to play 3B besides Shaw.

Which is why the holdup likely on the Cubs end

That'd be too many lefties in the rotation.  I'd rather get Kelly.  He's consistent, has WS experience, and should be cheaper because hes a rental. Keep Owen.

There is a certain recently DFA'd guy with the initials V.B. who could slight right in!

Well the Cubs already have a top 3 offense in baseball and adding a guy that will hit over 45+ HRs - I think that makes a huge difference.  The only part of this offense that looks average at times is against LHP - Suarez would have made a big difference there.

I think Suarez helps a lot in the playoffs.  Like to me, there is a massive difference between Shaw getting 20-25 ABs in a playoff series against the Phillies or Dodgers vs Suarez taking those ABs.  And that can be the difference between a win and loss.  Hopefully Shaw has turned a corner with his recent success and it becomes a moot point.

I think you are massively overestimating Suarez's talent level based on the small sample of games you've seen him play against the Cubs. When he's bad, he's no better than Shaw and maybe slightly worse. And he's bad for long stretches. Then he goes on a heater and things even out a little. He puts Dansby's cold and hot streaks to shame.

There is a reason he's bounced around the league.

How many lefties is too many lefties?  The answer may very well be, "It doesn't matter" but going into next season with a rotation including Imanaga, Boyd, Steele (hopefully), Gore... That's a lot of lefties.  Good pitching is good pitching though, and some of the best available guys just so happen to be left handed.

I don't think I am personally.  He's a 2x all-star having a career year and the commitment would have been short term.  And this year, he's a potential 5 WAR player on pace for 140+ OPS+, on pace for 45-50 bombs.  He's also played for less teams than Juan Soto has - so I don't think him 'bouncing around' is indicative of his talent level.

I don't think he's a superstar or anything and surely not a guy I'd extend - but he's on a different level than Shaw.  Shaw will be lucky to have 1 future season where he hits 40 bombs with a .900 OPS and produces a 5 WAR season

That is true.  He is certainly good at scouting, drafting and developing.  But some of these trades are so mind boggling.  He has too much of a gamblers mentality.

Well yeah, I'd put every cent I own on Shaw never touching 40HRs and a huge amount on never touching .900 OPS too, but he doesn't have to. He's vastly better defensively. He's vastly better on the bases. All Shaw has to do is be like a 115-120 wRC+ guy and he matches Suarez's career year. even as a league average bat he's probably a 3 fWAR player.
