That's fair.  This is just a gut feeling more than anything else, but I think his best days are in front of him.  Whether it's a different delivery or arm angle, or even learning a new pitch.. It's hard not to watch guys like Palencia and PCA take such massive steps forward this year, and think that a guy like Assad wasn't primed to do the same thing if not for his injuries.

Also agree that the Cubs absolutely have to find a TORP this deadline.  Anything less than a major trade would be malpractice.

Also in his favor is that I'm of a mind he was pitching hurt in some way in the last 1/3 to 1/2 of his innings last season and that's at least a contributor to why he was so much worse than usual during that timeframe.

Emmanuel Clase is now a part of the gambling investigation with the Guardians, cross him off the list.

The Guardians have to be p’d.  It would be hard to trade him now and he might be suspended.

3 days to the deadline and still nothing from Jed, I'm getting ready to be underwhelmed.

He's counting his money

Why is the Hoyer extension deserved? What has the team accomplished with him as GM?

Remember when other execs voted on the best front offices earlier this year and the Cubs didnt receive any votes for the second straight year?

Hes not even respected by other FOs. He got his extension because he put out a competitive team while slashing payroll. Most teams operate on postseason success.

You can look at this a few ways. If you want to judge him simply because "he hasn't made the playoffs" in five years, that is certainly your right. The chance that Jed makes a really bad trade in the next three days and the Cubs miss the playoffs is possible, however, probably a bit unlikely. I also think that ignores context; such as how ownership essentially forced a selloff which tanked his first few years.

You can look at it as Jed has a longer-term build. The reality is that the 2026 Cubs should be very good again; even if they don't resign Tucker, they will have a good chunk of money to spend just to get back to their somewhat frugal spending this year. Enough that barring PCA falloff, the Cubs should be a 90 win team on paper. I also think you can argue that the Cubs have left themselves a player short most years.

I think a neutral look has it that the Cubs have really only had three somewhat competitive teams and that Jed has had a winning record in all of them. He vacillates from "good enough to maybe sneak in" and so far "really darn good". He's somewhat risk adverse. He does a pretty solid job of hiring smart people around him; Kantrovitz, Zombro, Breslow, Counsell...all have been good hires. And while he's got his flaws and he's imperfect, that with the emergence of analytics and front offices who really believe in them. that the difference between Hoyer and the next guy, as long as ownership doesn't change their pattern is likely moot.

In the neutral view, I still think he's mostly earned it. You probably won't hire someone who will be better, and the Cubs have a good team this year. It gives him stability into the TDL, and from a media perspective it stops the "Is Hoyer going to tank the prospects 'cause he don't have an extension!" stuff. It also may help with getting the ball rolling on Tucker; and having stability there very well may help too.

Couple of points based on several different opinions and statements. First, Assad is a fine #5 starter. He is not better than Taillon. Next, he will be ready to be back on the team by mid August. And he could start then. He will do more than pitch in relief and it will be before September. I know many just look at era and determine the guy is good or bad. I know several fans couldn’t care less about peripherals but they do matter. The fact is Assad has been luckier than he is good. He has pitched to MOR counting numbers but with actual underlying numbers that suggest he is a #5 moving forward. This isn’t criminally underrating him, it is just speaking the truth. He is a bit better than Rea so that should help. But he isn’t someone I want pitching game 3 of a playoff series.

Very accurate and fair post. I've seen most all his starts and he's a solid, BOR innings eater pretty much. Slot him in at 4/5 in your rotation and let him go. Very durable until this season.

Good time to get the deal done before any big TDL moves have been made.

Well, you do need to secure the Front Office before trying to offer extensions to players ( Tucker, PCA).

Got to show them stability there and with the team before asking them to commit long term. 🤷‍♂️

You and I both know Hoyer was GM in name only for that team. Since this has become Jed's team, he hasn't even made the playoffs.

Huge difference between Assad and PCA or Palencia. Those guys had special talent. PCA was and is a 5 tool guy. Palencia throws the ball 102 mph. Assad has no such talent. He is what he is. A solid #5 starter who has lucked into numbers that would make him look like a MOR starter. There is very little reason to assume he will get better because PCA and Palencia did.

I agree that’s a good and fair post. While I don’t feel like he has earned an extension yet, it’s no coincidence that this deal was given now and not four days from now.

Its just really hard for me to get excited about our GM when the work the Brewers have done with less payroll power dwarfs his work.

This has nothing to do with what the post you responded to was about. We were discussing Assad. You are talking Hoyer. Long day, lots of threads open. I get it. But this isn’t for here.

My mistake!

Probably haven't been this amped for a series since the Detroit series. Good thing is we have a better umpiring crew for this series than the ones at Detroit.
