I wouldn't give them the last 3 pieces in the deal let alone with Horton on top. Even by Bowden standards that's stupidity.

I think Alcantara will be pricey. Probably more than most of us would want. But Bowden is ridiculous. I think someone else posted something like Cassie and a minor league pitching prospect not named Wiggins for Alcantara. That is probably close. Maybe the Cubs have to add a 3rd piece that is not a top 30 in the system.

I would think the Marlins are going to over ask, they won't get what they asked for but, I suspect they'll try.

Hopefully the Dbacks play bad enough to sell .    I give serious consideration to acquiring Merril Kelly and Eugenio Suarez . Looks  like Counsell is dead set on having a RHH behind PCA and in front of Busch .  Cubs don’t have a good option for that .

I like Shaw’s future but in an all in year , wouldn’t mind getting a proven power bat at 3B .

Didn't Bowden once asked for Corey Patterson and Juan Cruz for Pokey Reese?

So this new proposal of Bowden fits his style.

I wanted to share this level of stupidity of Bowden's.

The rabbit holes are not kind today. If you want to get angry, follow what Patterson was ultimately traded for and how much WAR he and those he was traded for ultimately produced after.

I agree. That is why I don’t expect him to be traded until close to the deadline. I am sure if the Cubs offered Cassie, Alcantara and Wiggins now the Marlins would take the deal. But I don’t see the Cubs doing that. So Marlins will wait until they realize no one will give that much away.

I had mentioned the exact same players a few days ago. So obviously I agree with you. I think the Cubs make their bench better by improving their starting line up and putting Shaw in the bench. That one deal would improve the line up, the bench and the rotation.

But at the time of the request Patterson/Cruz was an overpayment for Reese.

I think Jed talked today or maybe it was yesterday, and he implied that he wanted to acquired a starter sooner rather than later. Not the first time we've heard that but if Alcantara is not going to be dealt till closer to the deadline, I doubt he's a target.

This might sound crazy but has Flexen played to deserve consideration for being a starter?  His stats (only 18.1 innings) are incredible, but maybe CC likes him in the pen?

I’m not sure Flexen can sustain what he is doing. I think he is striking out 5 guys per 9 innings. I don’t think they see him as a starting pitcher. I would guess he is more likely to be cut than to be the every 5th day starting pitcher on the Cubs.

Sounds like they want an Angels starter.

I wonder if the Royals would give up Cole Ragans.  As great as he is, that team will never be great until they surround Bobby Witt Jr with some more capable hitters.  He would be a great great fit but it'll probably take 4 good prospects to get it done

He's injured though and probably coming back late July at earliest.  But 3 consecutive years potentially with a FIP under 3.  That would be real nice

Or he could be having TJS in the not too distant future. I highly doubt Ragans would be a consideration.

No elite arms available that aren't in major down years available. At this point just give me a middle of the rotation guy who can eat innings and keep the farm the intact.

They're not gonna be rotation options for this year most likely but I wonder if we could try to trade for Bradley or Baz and try to fix them. TB will probably imrpove the rotation and kick them out. They'd be fun projects.

A middle of the road pitcher who can eat innings (let’s use Kelly, as an example), is going to cost a decent prospect.

Not sure I'd call Kelly middle of the road when 4 of the last 6 years he had an ERA under 3.41. I'd actually give up a good (Not Wiggins/Ballesteros) piece for him.

That is true, he isn’t middle of the road. I would call Kelly MOR. So you are suggrsting someone like Rea.  I think the Cubs need to do better than that. Even if it means losing a solid prospect I feel they have to get a guy that would be fine with to start a playoff game.

It would be pretty weird to have TJS for a shoulder problem.

Oh for sure. That’s why I referenced it as a rabbit hole. My comment was totally unrelated to the discussion. It’s just as I looked into it I followed the rabbit hole to when he was ultimately traded. Then got ill.

That exactly what they need is another guy to start a playoff game, preferably game 2.

I'd be more comfortable with that rotation if Taillon and Boyd were matched up with opponents number 3 and 4 in a series.

As the Twins fade further and further down the standings I'm having my morning coffee and eying that roster like the Vince McMahon meme
