Think we are at about 51% now. Want to keep going? Do you want to continue racking up post count?

Oh no, the number is going up out of spite, can't have that

So you think it's roughly a 50/50 proposition that Thaiss is tendered?  The guy who was DFA'd and sold for cash during a period players are frequently laundered off the 40 man?

Ya. He was DFA'd on a roster that had O'Hoppe and dArnaud. The Cubs have Amaya and nothing. I would love to think the Cubs made this move to attempt to DFA him and stash him in AAA, but they were a day away from being able to let the Angels do that and then trade for him.

Matt Thaiss has been a replacement level player. Just yesterday, the Cubs were willing to DFA Patrick Wisdom who's been above replacement level until last year. Had the Eli Morgan trade happened yesterday, I don't think they were going to tender Wisdom.

I'm not sure exactly how likely the Cubs are to tender Thaiss. Maybe because he's a catcher, they will be more willing to do so. But they acquired him for a cash amount likely just above that of what a waiver claim would cost. They just DFA'd another replacement player. I suspect the number is much lower than 50/50 based on recent actions.

Yeah this is all well thought analysis, but what if I’ve decided that everything Jed has ever done has been stupid and therefore every thing he will do is stupid, can I still freak out about this

Whats taking them so long to non tender Thaiss

Signed him for a million while on the 26 man. And 400k while in the minors.

Not sure how the minors thingy works without options left?

I'll be glad when he's non-tendered tomorrow and we can put this thread to bed with squally.

This seems oddly specific, but I haven't seen any reporting.  Did one of the beat guys say it on the radio?

But generally split contracts are a minor league contract where the guy makes well above the typical minor league rate while in the minors and a relatively low major league rate if he's in MLB.  So in this scenario he'd go to AAA, make a prorated $400K as long as he's down there, and if/when he gets to MLB make prorated $1M (a couple hundred grand higher than the league minimum).

Hmm okay fair enough.  It sounds close enough to what I expected to question too much.  Good find.

But to your question, players can agree to a minor league deal even if they're out of options.  In this case Thaiss' choices are the deal being reported or gambling that he can get a full time MLB roster spot.  The $400K is MUCH better than standard AAA salary, so it's a smart way to hedge his bets.  HOWEVER, the Cubs can't call him up and down throughout the year.  Once they call him up he stays up unless they cut him (and pay him the remainder of that $1M salary).

So basically a minor league deal and not on the 26 man roster. Which is perfectly fine. Is that correct?

Thanks for explaining this.

One other thought - would he be considered on the 40 man?
