I've seen articles saying Toronto and another team offered more

I don't question that somebody has written or said that.  I question the validity of these rumors.

rumors like that can often be traced back to who it benefits the most... Burnes' camp might drop those because it makes him look better, Arizona people can use that to make them seem more desirable, Toronto and whoever else can use it as an excuse, "see we tried to pay him a ton!"

They're generally unsourced and only out there to make someone look better

I agree!  I'd go as far as saying that they are usually leaked lies.  No way he turned down 245 to play for 210.  Regardless of where he lives.  If I had to guess, the 245 is what he was looking for, and not an offer.

It actually very well could be the correct figures however. Players very regularly take the best deal. These leaks are likely not *lies*. At this point, Burnes nor any team has a reason to just outright make horsefeathers up. What they have the reason to do is skew the truth.

Toronto, and Canada has very high tax rates. Arizona, conversely, much, much lower. So Corban Burnes gets the Arizona fans on his side by leaking the $240m offer - it sounds like he's turned down money. Toronto leaks the $240m offer because it makes a compelling "we tried" argument - he turned down more money. In reality, with taxes, he probably didn't turn down much at all, especially if one deal had an opt out (Arizona had an opt out) or if one was less years (we haven't really heard length of the other offers).

In the end, everyone wins the media game - Burnes and Toronto.

^ That assumes everyone is as petty and needy as these entities/the league. It’s not as if there’s equal benefit when all the articles are abt the Blue Jays and whoever’s supposed offers. It’ll be a popular move in Arizona no matter what because getting maybe the best all around SP in the sport rn on an already strong roster for a song is pretty sweet

Great signing

Arizona flat tax rate 2.5%

Ontario 13.16%

Yeah, that takes a good chuck of the extra.

This feels a bit silly.  You just spent the better part of a year trying to find a good deal for Jonathan India, and now you acquire a similar player?  Did Matt Mclain suffer an offseason injury?

Lux has more control, no?

Sirota’s a good prospect for whatever that’s worth…Or at least a very Dodgers pickup in that he’s put up some interesting da numbas in interesting places at interesting times, played alot of ball…Could be the future CF out there

I suspect the Reds, rather than the Brewers, will be the toughest NL Central competition for Cubs this year. They’ve got a steady (assuming McClain’s OK) starting infield with some depth, Lux may enjoy GBA, and the pitching is maybe the most talented in the division rn

Ran the quick math on the zips projections for the 3 teams and it's the Cubs at 48.6, Brewers at 42.8, and Reds at 32.6, so there's a pretty huge gap there, though this was obviously before Lux and his 1.5 fWAR came over. They HATE the Reds bullpen, -0.3 combined projection there. And they love DLC and McLain (9 wins combined) but think that Candelario and Encarnacion-Strand are only going to give them about 2.5 wins total from the corners (little more now with Lux I assume). Outfield is pretty uninspiring too. Rotation certainly has potential, but not a whole lot else there besides the middle of the infield.

Rooker extends for 5/60 with a 6th year option. I hope they put a decent team around him soon. I just love the story.

Yeah, good for Rooker. A's took a shot on him and he's blossomed into a solid hitter. He gets paid but also gives them a team discount. I also keep thinking about this tweet from last year. Dude must've been mad because then he went and hit .293!

There was some point relatively late in the year where he was actually hitting .303 and I remember there being some funny interactions around that.

The Lux trade is just so confounding from the Reds' standpoint. Roster Resource has him plugged in at DH (lol). As said above, they spent so much time finding a good deal for India to open the infield logjam and then they go out and complicate it again. Either McClain is hurt way more than anyone knows or they are planning more trades. They also still have Noelvi Marte in AAA (yes he had an awful season but was a very good prospect).

Verlander seems pretty cooked, but that park and that defense might be able to keep him viable and let him rack up some more milestones, which would be cool

I'm a bit surprised by the deal Kittredge just got from the Orioles.  $10 million seems like a lot even for how good he was last year.

Back to the Dodgers and all this Salary Cap talk. Is there any research that ties higher and higher payrolls to more and more wins? Either in regular or post-season? It feels like a huge payroll can you to the ~90 win area, but you need something more an just dollars (better scouting, player development, draft projects, pitch lab - something) to get the 95, 98, 100 win range.

I think the reason the reason fans hate the Dodgers is because they are smart and opportunistic. It's not their fault they are one of the very few teams acting like they want to win a WS.

The salary cap stuff, I can go back and forth on. What the league really needs right now is a salary floor. So many teams can be spending more money and they dont.
