I was most impressed by Carpenter today. 97 pitches in 7 IP, 1 ER, 2K, 4 hits, 0 BB. Just like last year, very solid, especially early in the season.

Oswalt on the other hand went 106 pitches in 6 IP, 6 ER, 2K, 7 hits, 1 BB.

Carp may have a good year, but that Astros line-up in anemic.

Come on. They have Morgan Ensberg as their clean-up hitter. The man can rake...

He's my pick to have the best pitching year from the Cards (as long as he can stay healthy).

Yup. Carpenter was better than Mulder last season.

Agreed. They looked pretty weak. Bags doesn't stike fear in me like he used to. Berkman will help A LOT, but right now they aren't a serious threat on offense. The D looked pretty shaky last night as well. They played the Cards into at least 3 runs.

Carp did look very good though...

Mulder is my pick for the Cy. If he's healthy (every indication he is). He should be a lock for 20 wins.

Nobody is a lock for 20 wins.

You're right. I'm just a little excited after opening day...

So were we, but two pinch hit appearances later, I'm in mid-season form.

Carpenter had a career year LY. He could come close to those #'s if he stays healthy, which is a huge ? for him. I just do see him surpassing any of his #'s from LY. Astros -Berkman, -Beltran, -Kent. Nice pitching performance just don't get over excited. The highest the Astros finish in the division is 4th. The Reds & maybe even the Brewers will finish ahead of the 'stros.

The Astros are probably about average in the league in offense. Carpenter looked sharp last night, but granted he wasn't pitching to the 29 Yankees.

Carpenter also finished the season on the DL last year costing him 3-4 starts. he could have been 16-20 game winner. I'm not saying he'll be healthy all year, but i don't forsee much of a drop off.

After a career year & a downgraded defensive team behind him, if you don't expect a little drop off, you may be setting yourself up for a little dissapointment.

This coming from a man who thinks Dusty is a good manager and Hendry a competent GM. Right brah. Right.

Look for 18-20 w's. 200+ K's and an ERA around 3.00. Place your bets now.

um, wow.

i'd totally put a bunch of money on that, because that's about as optimistic as you can get.

And just for reference, this would involve Carpenter getting 3-5 more wins than his career high, ~50 Ks more than his career high, and .5 ERA lower than his career low. All at the age of 30.

I'll keep that look out for it though!

Ouch, that doesn't help my predictions, but I won't complain. :D I still think Carpenter will have a better season than Mulder or Morris. But those 200 K predictions are pretty crazy. 18-20 wins can happen to anyone on the Cardinals staff, so that's not a big deal. I still think Carpenter will put up a season similar to his 2004 campaign.
