Not too much. Hopefully he got that all out of his system in one start. Not sure why TLR left him in so long, it was apparent he didn't have his stuff today. I guess it was because our bullpen had been abused by Suppan's outing yesterday. Not a good start to the season for Cards fans. Although I wouldn't be too optimistic at this point if I were a Cubs fan either. 3-3 vs. the Brewers and D-backs wouldn't leave me jubilant.

I'm not backing off my original post though. Carp will do well this year barring injury. His ERA will be laughable for awhile after today, but we'll see. You guys allow Maddux a lot of slack in April.

maddux is also our 4th starter, not our supposed #1 or 2.

I just do see him surpassing any of his #'s from LY.

This coming from a man who thinks Dusty is a good manager and Hendry a competent GM. Right brah. Right.

Look for 18-20 w's. 200+ K's and an ERA around 3.00. Place your bets now.

I'm betting big against that, especially after today's shelling.

he went 5 and gave up 3 ER today, correct?

correct

But he spread his runs across two games. Their ERA's right now are similar. I'll take one win where the BP could give up three runs vs. one loss and one win that the BP had to take to a crap shoot in the 12th.

The amount of slack Cub fans grant Maddux (or Maddux's performance in general) has no bearing on how good Carpenter is going to be this year.

Maddux's history of success is also a wee bit deeper than Carpenter's too.

The Admin has a point there. In fact last year was the first year that Carpenter was successful and healthy.

And it really should have only been two, if the umpire hadn't incorrectly called the runner safe at first.

And more important than the effect on Greg's ERA, the game would not have gone into extra innings (assuming everything else played out the same, which isn't a given).

You are right; however, he was highly regarded when he was with Toronto, if memory serves.

Yes indeed he was.

Thank you both for bringing that up. He's not a typical flash in the pan journeyman pitcher. Injuries derailed his early promise. I deserve a little ribbing for this post after yesterday (as do those naysayers on our board that virtually think our season is over), but I still stand by it.

Carpenter pitched a strong game on Saturday and got the win, 5-3 vs. the Brewers.

6.2 innings pitched, 5 hits, 3 er, 3BB, 5SO. And the three earned runs charged to Carpenter were scored off Al Reyes with two outs in the 7th, after Carpenter had left the game.

Carp pitched a nice game and is now 2-1 on the year.

Predicting failure or a dropoff for Carpenter is no different than me predicting Carpenter having a better year than last year based on him coming into his own as a pitcher and finally achieving his potential after a breakout year last year.

Same difference. Neither is written in stone, and either could happen.

Either could happen, but your prediction is based on one year of success compared to five years of mediocrity for the opposite view.

A little disingenuous, don't you think? Carp is 9-4 with a 3.13 ERA (not withstanding a 8 ER outing against Philly earlier). Zambrano is comparable. Regardless of what point in time I chose, Carpenter has been the best pitcher for the Cards so far which was my original point.

Haha... actually his prediction has been pretty good to this point; Carpenter has pitched very well for most of the year... 9-4 with a 3.17 ERA. We'll see if he can keep it going at the end of this season, because he kind of crapped out toward the end of last year. He's on pace to throw 240 innings this year, which are a whole lot for a guy with a history of arm trouble.
