So a couple of days ago Sharma said it doesn’t look like the Cubs are going to sign Soto and today they mentioned Santander as a possible target . Can’t say that I am surprised .

Santander depending on Bellinger opt out / catcher / 1 SP and 2 relievers will probably be the off-season plan IMO.

But if Bellinger opted out there is no reason they shouldn’t go all in on Soto. I feel someone like Santander would be similar to guys like Teaoscar Hernandez, O’Neil, and maybe Alonso. All of those guys would be nice additions, even if Bellinger came back. But if Belli is gone I feel they should aim higher.

The article made is seem as though if Bellinger didn’t opt out they would sign anyone. And I think that is a mistake, unless they are going to trade for a big bat instead(Vlad or Tucker).

I'm gonna derail us for a minute here.  I'm going to DC Saturday for the games Saturday and Sunday.  There's currently an 80% chance of rain for Saturday afternoon and evening with a 4:00 start planned.  Say it rains and they don't get the game in Saturday.  Are they playing 2 on Sunday and what time does game 1 start if so?

It's literally August, can we not do seven months of this.

Doesn't look like they have a shared off day the rest of the season, so I'd assume double header.  The Sunday game is already scheduled for 1:35 local time, so I'd guess they try to keep that firm?  Since it's a travel day and there may be Sunday Night Baseball window considerations I lean towards it being more of a pure back to back DH where Game 2 starts X mins after Game 1, but I'm not all that confident.

I can definitely see the Cubs being in on Santander, and I think it would be a mistake.  He will be 30 years old going into next season, and he will be expensive.  This is where Jed's mentality will continue to bite him in the ass.  The 26 year old elite future Hall of Fame superstar is too expensive, so let's try to maximize "value" by spending a good chunk of that money on the older, less productive option instead.  Santander isn't a bad consolation prize, but that doesn't make him the right answer.

I don't believe for a second that the Cubs will be contenders for Soto

They wouldn’t be contenders even if Soto only asked for $300 million

Is there a technical term for making up a hypothetical situation and then using the hypothetical to attack the person involved in the hypothetical

Agree, if Bellinger leaves that 25 mil off the book and they can put towards a Soto offer.

Theyll also have Hendricks 16 mil off the book that they can put towards Burnes offer

They may even start game 1 at noon

They need to sweep this series somehow, I know it going to be super tough to do so but they need to go on a winning streak in order to get themselves back into serious contention to catch the Braves for that final WC spot.
