nah, I think that dispite him saying he never gets nervous, he most certainly got nervous over the course of the game when an actual NFL defense threw him looks he like has never seen before.

I'll agree with that. He looked rattled. He was struggling to do things he's shown on tape and even in the preseason that he can definitely do.

Doug and OB ranting about having the wrong QB after a win is so much better than them ranking about having the wrong QB after a loss.

Pretty much a burn the tape game for Caleb.  He definitely needs to learn how to stay in pocket and the backwards scrambling isn't going to work as often as in college.

Some of the decision making was maybe okay but kind of hard to know given how God awful the accuracy was.

So yea just burn the tape.

That’s the concern though, that’s his whole thing isn’t it? Getting out of the pocket and making plays. It’s not going to work in the NFL as often. I feel like there’s way more development than we were hoping.

feels like we’re back on the failed QB carousel that we’ve been stuck on our whole lives. But I acknowledge that I’m prone to massive overreactions

If he still looks like this at the halfway point this season, it'll be justified.

It’s really depressing that we seem to have an OLine problem for the 18th year in a row. But Caleb was bad. Full stop. Inaccurate throws, not seeing open receivers, and as Kyle mentioned, not showing off that special ability to escape pressure and get the ball downfield in spite of the bad line. This game has next to no bearing on my level of optimism for Caleb long term, but I was expecting much more.

Jeez o’ Pete give the kid some runway. You guys are nuts about this. He got punched in the mouth today. Let’s see how he reacts.

I haven’t seen anyone drawing any conclusions about him based on today’s performance.

He was something of an extreme in college, especially at USC. He hit a really good number of his plays quickly and in rhythm  but when he extended plays he REALLY extended play length.

Yes, improvisation is and can be part of the package, but he also will need to get better at recognizing when he can.  To some extent it's a risk/reward calc and you could get chaos ball like Josh Allen, but that first sack he took was an absolute killer and one he probably beat 9/10 at USC and is only gonna get 4/10 in the NFL. So he should taken the smaller loss and instead he risked the drive killer early.

All that said it was really the accuracy issues that hurt him today.

Unofficial final preseason game lol

When your starting QB gets like 40 reps the entire preseason, is it any surprise he's not super great week 1?

Rookie starting QB. I get that you don’t want to risk injury in the preseason, just be ok with these kind of games for at least a few weeks.

But considering that 1st overall pick QBs were 1-14-1 their last 16 first ever games, today was not terrible.

I don't think expectations forced him to throw for 93 yards.

I was talking about the reaction to his performance,  not the performance itself.

Yes. Or rather, the *degree* of not super great was surprising.

I don't think anyone would be too surprised if he threw for 210 yards and a couple of bad INTs because he misread a coverage or something.

The near-complete failure of his ability to throw footballs was a level of not great that I don't think any of us expected.

People want to focus on how bad Williams look, alrighty then, but the whole offense sucked. That is on Waldron.

If the Bears can win with defense and special teams, imagine what this team can do when (yes when) the offense gets going.

I suspect Caleb and the offense will look better next week against a tougher team.
