Patrick Kane wasn’t a part of this team, but he carried the torch for American hockey for a long time and inspired some of the guys on this gold medal winning team. He gave me hope in 2010 that we would see this one day.

Kudos to the USA for winning.  But the game that Crosby won in OT was probably more competitive than todays game.  Hellebuyck should get a platinum medal.

I'm just waking up, what happen with Gaudreau's dad?

Nothing, he's just in the audience feeling touched by the representation

the players were carrying around a Gaudreau jersey on the ice and they were showing his dad reacting in the stands

canada had no business losing that game

Not a hockey expert by any means but that was my initial reaction. Canada had a 5v3 for 90 seconds and couldn't score, multiple great chances elsewhere in the game. The 2nd and 3rd in particular they clearly dominated. On another day, we lose by 3-4 goals.

I don't know how a) Werenski beat McKinnon to that puck and b) bodied him up enough to get a clean pass off to Hughes.

I am most certainly enjoying the crying that is coming from north of the border.

Yeah and if you saw them getting the silver medal, many you could tell were pissed.

If Canada and US played 10 times Canada would win 9 of those but its one game winner take all. Suck it up, you have a beautiful country without a jackass running it. Life goes on

Every 3-on-3 turnover is catastrophic. It's why it's so exciting

mcdavid was unbelievable in the tournament but I think he really hurt them by trying to go 1v3 twice in OT

Don't know why McDavid kept the puck when he drew all 3 US defenders, easy dump off to Makar or, I believe, Mackinnon for an open shot.  Fortunately, for the US, Werenski did the opposite, drew 2 and slide the puck to Hughes for an open shot.

Hockey experts - Was this the best US team ever?

It’s difficult to compare eras because the game has changed so much. The US has been closing the gap on Canada for the last two decades though. More Americans are not only being drafted, but taken at the top of their draft class.

The strength of this US team was in goal and on the backend. A case can be made that Makar is the single most talented defensemen in the world, but the best defensive unit was clearly the Americans. They also had the best goaltender in the world and he showed why.

What stands out most for me is what Jack Hughes said in his post-game interview when he talked about the brotherhood of the team. American teams were talented in the past but seemed disjointed. See 1998 in Nagano. These guys played with each other and for each other.

Best ever? Quite possibly. All I know for certain is they will inspire a new generation of Americans to play the game and American hockey will continue to grow because of them.
