Cubs place Walker on disabled list

04/11/2005 11:57 AM ET

Chicago Cubs Media Relations Office

The Chicago Cubs today placed infielder Todd Walker on the 15-day disabled list with a moderate to severe medial collateral ligament sprain of the left knee. In addition, infielder Mike Fontenot was recalled from Iowa (AAA).

Walker -- who hit .381 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI in his first six games -- sustained the injury yesterday in a collision with Milwaukee's Carlos Lee.

Fontenot has batted .308 with a solo homer in his first four games for the Triple-A affiliate. The left-handed hitter was acquired by the Cubs February 2 with infielder/outfielder Jerry Hairston and minor league pitcher David Crouthers in exchange for outfielder Sammy Sosa.

So I suppose a severe sprain is actually a slight tear?

I strained my knee last year skiing. it didn't swell it just was sore for a while. The doctor told me to wait a couple months and then do knee exercises to strengthen. A strain is kind of like a rubberband that is slightly perforated. It's not really a tear it is just strained.

There is a chance that Aramis tweaked his groin again. During interviews this morning, he said that he was 100%. However, Dusty said that he did tweak it and that he would be sitting out today as a precaution due to the weather. I'm not sure how serious the problem is but I figured it was worth posting.

It looked to me like he might have tweaked it during Sunday's game when he hit his last double. He was hopping and then realized the ball was off the wall so he had to hustle it to 2b. It looked like he grimaced a little bit and Speier came over and asked if he was okay. It must not have been too bad because he played in yesterday's game.

So, help me out, is he playing tomorrow or not? Because if there is a chance he's playing im starting him on my fantasy team. You cant skip a 2-for-1 chance. But it he's gonna ride the pine Im definatley benching him.

Cubs.com preview says he will likely start 1 game, and it quotes him as saying "I'll play two, If I have to".

I think the Ramirez groin problem was probably BS. I suspect Dusty just wanted to get Neifi in the game and Ramirez went along with the act. Check it out:

Asked around 11 a.m. why he wasn't in the lineup, Ramirez said: "I guess you have to ask Dusty."

But Ramirez said he just wants to play.

"I told the guys I was ready to roll," Ramirez said. "I had already hit and my mind was on the game. They let me know [around 10:30 a.m.] they had scratched me."

Ramirez said the groin "had not acted up at all," and he had "no problem" with it.

"I want to play," he said. "That's what I'm here for. I didn't come here to watch the guys play. They have to play in that weather too. I fought it a little bit, but it's a manager's decision."

Two hours later, after the rainout was announced, Ramirez changed his tune. He said his groin wasn't as sound as he had said earlier.

"I can't explain how it is," he said. "It's just not right."

Sounds fishy to me. I'm happy that Aramis is probably not having a groin issue but it is discouraging to see Dusty using lame excuses to stuff Neifi into the lineup.

Maybe I'm the only person who doesn't have a huge problem with Aramis taking a day off on a cold, windy and wet day in April even if he says his groin feels fine.

I might not like Neifi batting second (or Macias subbing), but I'd rather be a tiny bit safe than a lot sorry later.

According to the announcer from ESPN, Nomar is experiencing "flu-like symptoms". It is food poisoning or some sort of virus. He will sit out the game today and almost didn't play yesterday. He was feeling so bad that he almost didn't come to the ballpark but will be there.

You can't really call having "flu-like symptoms" an injury though, can you?

Last time I heard "flu-like symptoms", Eddy Curry was out for the rest of the year, and might need heart surgery. One irregular heartbeat is enough for Chicago sports teams.

According to Baker, the Cubs regular shortstop is just feeling a little under the weather.

"He's OK," Baker said. "With this warm spring, and the allergies they have in Pittsburgh and here, he's not been feeling good for about five days in a row. I told him to eat and drink a lot of water to get his strength back."

....

"I don't necessarily think it's a good time for a day off," said Baker. "He had a great spring but not a good April. One thing's for sure, this guy's going to hit."

So he has allergies?

Good grief, is he malnourished? (that's the rumor Mike North pushes on the Score)

Can you call a left groin injury an injury?

This stupid thread is going to be a 100 pages long by the end of the season. :wall:

That seems unlikely when you realize that the season ended about an hour ago.

Nomar Garciaparra is likely headed to the disabled list due to a tear in his groin.

The severity of the tear is still to be determined. Both Jerry Hairston Jr. and Neifi Perez will play regularly until either Nomar or Todd Walker returns. Perez will stay at shortstop until Nomar makes it back. Apr. 20 - 10:08 pm et
