I was thinking about going to this but between 90 degrees and Hendricks pitching I decided against it.  Hopefully Kyle makes me regret my decision.

This is about as lopsided of a matchup as we've seen this year.  If the Cubs pick this one hard not to get overly excited.

I think a split is fine this series given the pitching matchups.  3/4 would be huge though.

They haven't been as good as the ERA implies, but they got a ton of bad bounces in May so they were due.

Leiter's a legitimate dude, SSS but Little since the start of June and Hodge since his callup have been too.  Miller's a fine matchup type.  Neris has actually been pitching well for like 2 months, but those awful awful blowup against the Giants and Rays were sort of Karma for his terrible pitching/sparkling ERA in April.

I think the unit is one arm short of having me feeling comfortable, two arms short of feeling good.  Bigge looks like he might be one, and Merryweather was certainly one before his injury.  Palencia is the other internal option I think has a chance.  And of course if the team keeps piling up wins they can add someone externally.

I know that he isn't the greatest but, why not start Druce Miley over Hendricks?

What happened to Hendricks' back problem? Does it only hurt when he's getting lit up?

Is it too much to hope for Assad to get back after the break?

Hendricks might absolutely get rocked tonight, but he's been a Cardinal killer his entire career. Not sure Drew is a better option.

Against the Cardinals:

Career - 172 IP 2.62 ERA
2023 1GP 7 IP 2 Runs
2024 1GP 4.1 IP 2 Hits 0 Runs (Wicks injury game when Hendricks was horrible and coming out of the BP)

 

And unless I missed a recent update, Assad was trending as the starter tomorrow.

Smyly is not at all stretched out.  His longest outing this year is 2.1 innings.

Also I don't expect much out of Hendricks, but I do think I'd still prefer him to Smyly on a per inning basis even if Drew were stretched out.  That's more being anti-Smyly than pro Kyle though.

So we have Steele, Imonaga, Taillon, Assad, and Wesneski.

I don't dislike Hendricks the person but he shouldn't be out there anymore. (I'm sure that he'll have the game of his life now that I posted that)

They don't have a choice with the DH tomorrow. If there wasn't a DH, they could of went Assad/Wes/Taillon. Someone has to pitch the extra game.

I can't believe we have our first stretch of competency in like 2 months, we have a 4 game series against our historic rivals who's playoff spot we are also trying to take....and we have to start with Hendricks v Gray.

I still find it funny that it was Gray's turn in the rotation to throw Weds and the Cardinals chose to hold him back to go against us on extra days rest. They ended up losing both games on Weds. Lost 2 of 3 against the Royals when they didn't have to go against Ragans/Lugo. I would feel pretty good about splitting with them all things considered - especially with them luckily missing Steele/Imanaga for the second series in a row...
