Gomes hit the proverbial wall hard. I'm sure he will become someone's bench coach soon and be shortlisted for manager jobs.

Someone like the Yankees or Phillies or another good team will pickup Yan and he will magically return to his positive self.

Best of fortune to Yan-can-cook

Remember when the Cardinals signed Willson Contreras and their entire pitching rotation took a dump?

Reminder that Yan Gomes is another $6M flushed down the toilet.  Not huge dollars by itself, but there is a lot of dead money on the aggregate when accounting for all the other Yan-like deals the Cubs have had to eat.

To be fair though, Yan's option looked like a no brainer going into the season, so I can't really fault the Cubs for this one. At worst, he was going to be an experienced backup catcher, but it turns out that experience is the only thing he has left.

Pretty fortunate timing here.  What Nido lacks in knowing Cubs pitchers he makes up for in knowing Mets hitters.  I wonder if he gets two starts this weekend to try and take advantage and get him into the mix quickly.

The other thing that's interesting is there are some signs that there's a lot more in the tank offensively for Nido than he's ever shown before.  Compared to '21-'23 his contact is up, his chase is down, his groundballs are down, and his exit velo is WAY up.  He's got a .317 xwOBA which is not just better than league average for a catcher it's better than league average for everybody.  David Stearns isn't dumb so I'm sure there's something I'm missing but it's interesting.

It was his turn to be seduced by the siren song of Luis Torrens.  Rite of passage for a front office exec really.

Between 2013-2014, Yan Gomes put up 9.3 fWAR. But that ended up being more than half his career value. Still, he managed to stick around another decade and put up numbers that kept him a good backup option that was often ill-suited to his role as a primary catcher until the wheels finally fell off this year.

All things considered, he's had a solid career. He strikes me as the kind of guy who might give it a shot to latch on elsewhere, but this feels like The End even if he hasn't recognized it yet.
