I would be very surprised if this happened and it was not step 1 of a full scale rebuild.

Press conference on the season and future plans is happening as I type.  Rumors around town are that Mozeliak and Marmol are going to be back but I would bet there are major cuts to the MLB team to spend on infrastructure at the minor league level.  I have no idea what they're thinking if that's not the move and they keep those 2 in place for next year.

I wonder if, whether paired with a commensurate title or not, Chaim Bloom doesn't get a major increase in responsibility.  He built a great farm for the Sox.  He has not proven he can build a winner, but he has proven he can manage a rebuild.

Should have checked Twitter and THEN posted rather than vice versa

Makes sense.  Gives Bloom a chance to rebuild their minor league development system and focus solely on that while Mo finishes out his contract.

Explicit confirmation.  They don't necessarily have to move Gray to lower payroll, their payroll is already down ~$60M year over year as the offseason opens.  So if they do move him it's going to be a sign things are really getting taken down to the studs down there.

Mozeliak staying on in the POBO role through 2025 is insane to me, they hired Bloom a year ago!

Eh, it doesn't seem that crazy to me.  He spent this year evaluating the minor league and development system, he'll have the next year to focus on making the necessary changes and then takes over the reins after that.

I guess it strikes me as a bit of a stretch that Bloom is uniquely equipped to reform the player development system.  Hire the guy who is gonna be in that chair and then help them fix it, and keep Mozeliak for roster management bandwidth if you need to lean in.  I think what it signals more is that they aren't actually dissatisfied with how Mozeliak managed the roster, which, again, seems crazy given his post-pandemic track record.

Any extreme Cardinal fan will agree with that take. Basically that MO has been the mouth piece for the DeWitt's and that he's managed the roster how they've wanted. Done enough to keep butts in the seats, held onto their stars when the ideal baseball move was to trade them sooner, etc.

I think it signals how big of a disaster the development system is with some loyalty to Mozeliak thrown in.  And the Dewitts like stability, so this probably scratches that particular itch as well.  I can't argue that it's a weird way to go though.

Another former Cardinal player going on to a post season mvp award after they're no longer on the Cardinals.  It's legitimately amazing how much talent around the league was given up by the Cards

Zac Gallen

Sandy Alcantara

Jack Flaherty

Michael Wacha

Marcell Ozuna

Tyler O'Neil

Tommy Edman

Randy Arozarena

Adolis Garcia

Cardinals had the worst net loss in attendance in the league this season

And it was waaaaaaaaaay worse than the posted numbers.  There were a lot of games where you could get tickets for $1.  I love baseball but it was hard to justify going to a game even with the cheap tickets because for my gf and I to get a couple beers and share nachos, it's $100.  I can't imagine how families afford games these days.  Also, Busch concessions are markedly more expensive than Wrigley.

The cheapest beer at Busch outside of a $5.25 pre-game special is $9.75 so there's no way that data is accurate.

Unless Hot Doug's is back in action, anyone who tries to charge me almost $8 for a hot dog, like SF apparently is,  is at risk of me throwing the hotdog back at them.

Kind of wild that this team just punted an entire offseason.  A couple outfielders and a couple pitchers and this team is in the same neighborhood as the Cubs and Brewers.  Or in the other direction sell Gray and Helsely and you likely bring back some very real talent.

Instead they're just sort of idling because of this awkward Mozeliak/Bloom succession plan.

They wanted to do things but Contreras and Gray deciding they were going to stick to their NTCs, Arenado rejecting the trade to Houston and the rest of the 3B market developing slowly because of Bregman really screwed them.  The TV money issue is a huge problem for them too and when you combine that with attendance cratering last year (they sold tickets, but nobody was there to buy beer) and probably not seeing an uptick this year, their ownership is really clutching pearls about spending anything.  I think it's less succession plan than all the other external factors.

According to Effectively Wild, here's a list of all the free agents the Cardinals signed to major league contracts this offseason:

And they still signed more 2024 fWAR in major league contracts than the Brewers did.
