Pause this video at the 1.8 seconds after the snap mark.

All of his receivers have defenders on them.  The interior offensive line is getting beat and fields is going to be hit in about half a second.

If he takes a sack or scrambles, people say "what can he do? No one was open and there was no time."

Good NFL qb play beats both coverage and pressure

I mean, I don't think this play is the best example to the point you're trying to make.  This is a redzone placement throw to his stud wideout.  It's absolutely the type of throw that just having a great WR makes easier.  Fields biggest issue hasn't been placing those type of balls. It's the type of throw that really only gets called in the endzone.

Hard disagree.  Failure to make these kinds of throws, endzone or otherwise, has been consistently his biggest problem.

Right, because he hasn’t had someone like Moore.

I feel like Fields is learning to trust those tight window/ they-look-covered type of throws. I would love to see someone making the catches besides Moore to give JF. another option. For now, he’s got Kmet who sometimes makes it easy by getting open, and Moore who is just all-pr. Hopefully Mooney  figures it out or Harrison it is (?!)

I mean I think I saw NGS had that as a 25% completion probability throw.  Even with Moore it's basically a toss up throw.  He has thrown endzone balls like that plenty.  Having Moore is a big difference (though Mooney has occassionally been capable of grabbing those, not to the standard of Moore).

You do T see that type of throw much outside the redzone.  But Fields has done fine with those from my recollection.

NGS has it as the 4th most improbable completion of his career to date.

But it's not the throw, it's the *timing* of the throw.

Any concern that once again Fields completely avoids the middle of the field?  I don't know what the numbes are but it seems like 90% of his passes are outside the hashmarks and a decent number of his INTs are over the middle.  Here is last night's chart

Image

No concern. That's his game. It was his game at Ohio St. It's the game of guys like Watson (when he was good), Russell Wilson (when he was good) and Geno Smith (since he's been good). Typically the guys with big arms, but not the actual cannon arm. Guys like Allen and Mahomes use the whole field because they can throw bullets in tight windows. Then there are the guys who don't have the big arm to throw outside the numbers consistently, so they manipulate the middle of the field more (Brady, Brees types).

It would bother me more if it were the opposite.  If he could *only* work the middle of the field, defenses could take that away more easily.

Working the outside usually means you're taking what they give you, because they take away the middle first. But I think the hashmark placement on that diagram is making it look worse than it was, I remember several over-the-middle throws.

Can Roschon play that quick after a concussion protocol? I never know how that stuff works.

Either way its not a great situation to have such a banged up RB corp, although it is, theoretically, the position that is among the most replaceable

Foreman's skillset is kind of redundant. Most think due to his size, he's redundant to Johnson, but he's actually a very similar runner to Herbert. I think he will get the most carries between he and Johnson until Herbert is back.

I also wonder if Herbert goes to IR or not. 4 games would put him back for the TNF game vs. Carolina.  IDK that they'd want to bring him back on a short week with barely any practice in that scenario. So, if they don't, that'd put him back Week 11 which would keep Herbert out 44 days. If they don't IR him, I'd think there's a good chance he'd be good to go Week 9 which is just 24 days from the injury. So, you're potentially looking at a 20 day difference if you IR him or not.

Nah, Foreman is very much like Herbert. He doesn't mess around in the backfield like Monty. He gets the ball and finds the hole quickly with the burst to get through it fast. Like Herbert, Foreman is a good bet to get one of the higher yards per carry over expected and put up a solid percentage of explosive runs because he is so decisive with the ball.

So I refuse to get myself excited about the Panthers pick being number 1 because there is still so much season to play, don’t want to be disappointed. But it looks overwhelming likely at this point that worse case scenario it’s going to be top 10. The 10th pick in the draft had a 7-10 record the last 2 seasons meaning the Panthers would have to go 7-5 the rest of the season to land there.

Top 5?  In 2021 the 5th pick went 4-13, last year the 5th pick went 5-12. To go 4-13 the Panthers would have to go 4-8 the rest of the season which seems fairly reasonable even with improvement.

The biggest issue right now is SOS, they’ve played a tough SOS and while it does get lighter it will probably hurt us in tiebreakers later on. But pretty good chance of a top 5 pick and then there’s still our pick which could be right there too unfortunately.

Having another bad team's pick and being able to root for the tank standings and still enjoy your team's wins is *nice*

It’s like receiving pleasure and giving pleasure at the same time

As long as it's high enough to get either MHJ or Fashanu, I'm cool with it.

Read that Fields suggested to Getsy to up the targets for Moore?  It was Sports Mockery so, take it for its worth, however, given what we have seen, its not implausible.  Fields to Getsy - maybe we should increase the targets to DJ.  Fields to teammates - that dumb MF'er.

So worth zero.

Probably so.  Getsy taking 4 games to figure out it's worthwhile to keep targeting Moore is about right though.

You gotta love that Poles took away the best weapon for the rookie QB to throw to, I've expected a top 5 all the way, even with a weak division. The offense just lacks a lot of talent. Poles did very well. It's just too bad he did so little in FA to accomodate the roster.

To be fair,it's possible it's worth less than zero.

I can guess how it probably went in this one. One random article talks about the recent success of the O and wonders "how did it take Getsy and Fields 3 weeks to start targeting their best weapon?"

SM: Fields has to ask Getsy to target DJ Moore more.

@UMFan83 start the new game thread. You're the only person to post a winning game thread in a year. You must start this one. And we got big news, Justin Jefferson going on IR and officially OUT for the Bears game
