The Cubs need to take advantage of the soft parts of their schedule and they, uh... failed to do that last night. In a rather spectacular fashion.

They need to get back on track tonight, as they lost ground on both NLC teams in front of them.

Last night's pitching matchup wasas bad of a matchup as we could have in this series.  Our worst (yes, I'd consider Assad/Wesneski/Bullpen game better than Smyly) against their best.  Hopefully we give Alonso the Bonds treatment.  After him, their lineup is so weak

Smyly sucks hard. When Stroman comes back hopefully the rotation looks like.

Steele

Stroman

Tallion

Hendricks

Assad/Wes/Killian bullpen game

Not thrilled about that four and five spot but if Stroman can at least come back to his career numbers that's a pretty solid one through three.

They simply cannot basically forfeit every fifth game by letting Smyly start. He needs to be put on the IL with a mystery injury until he can get himself straightened out.

Just put him in the bullpen,  they need a lefty there...

Eventually they're gonna need to call up one of their prospect, maybe Brown and hope he provides the rotation a spark, otherwise they basically will be relying mostly on Steele,  Taillon, Stroman returning to form, and the offense.

They really can't afford to do bullpen days every 5 games after the Whitesox series because of no days off and taxing the bullpen.

They have 2 40 man roster spots now with Jensen claimed by Seattle. Wonder what they are planning

Perlaza kind of has to get one, though I wouldn't expect him to see any big league time until roster expansion.

Brown is

1) hurt

2) barely keeping his era below 5 at AAA

3) completely incapable of throwing strikes consistently

You can make the case that they might look a lot better on this front in a year, and i am sure plenty of people will line up to make that case, but right now the near-majors organizational pitching depth is pretty bad.  There's nobody putting up results at AAA that suggest they are ready to be replacement level starters in an MLB rotation

No Seiya again tonight.  I'm not necessarily clamoring for him but kind of crazy that he's gone from everyday starter to completely off the radar in terms of playing time, not even as a PH.

Fake edit: I guess he did get a PH appearance yesterday when I wasn't paying attention (and struck out) so I guess its not a complete benching, but hopefully they're either giving him a mental break and/or working on something with him.

He's not going to start for the time being. They made that pretty clear in recent statements. He has to work on his swing decisions and his mechanics.

I imagine the plan is for him start against LHP, if anyone besides the middle infield or C needs a day off, or if Madrigal or Tauchman get cold.  With the team in the playoff chase there may be a stretch like this where he's not very visible, but I wouldn't be surprised if we add it up at the end of the year and he started more than a third of games post-Candelario trade.

From what I've heard it seems like he's only going to start against lefties for the time being.

I bet he starts tomorrow.

I was just spit balling a name, didnt know he was hurt, but it could be Assad, Wesneski,  just someone who can maybe provide them a shot in arm the last month plus in the rotation.

I like Seiya and hope he can recover soon, but he's the 4th best outfielder on the team right now so he's going to be sitting a lot.

Gotta stick with who is hot and helping them win right now while they're going good..

We shouldn't see much of Suzuki or Wisdom until when or if  Tauchman and or Madrigal start to cool off.

I hope Taillon can give them another good start tonight,  hate to come off winning a big series against a tough team then drop one to one they should beat.

Carrasco’s ERA over his last 4 starts is 12.33 and he failed to make it through 3 innings in 2 of those starts. Scoreless 1st so far
