I agree with Jed being exactly what Ricketts wants. But I don’t feel the Cubs have anything to be embarrassed of on this attempt to sign Ohtani.

We really don't know what going on in that department, I really don't take much stock into anything these writers say.

I'll wait to see what if anything actually comes out after players are signed.

I personally feel like if Hoyer has a budget of staying under the Threshold, he is more likely to go out and add multiple players via trades and FA, like Hoskins and a SP or two with the money he has to spend over putting it all into one player.

Gotta say, I love good Ricketts/FO rant but seems like a really strange time to go off on the Cubs organization.

Ehh it’s built up aggression. I’ve been pretty oissed with them for the last two years. Anything they do wrong is just amplified for me now. To be entirely honest with you.

So Boob seems to have changed his article attributing the source of the “Cubs are out” story from a “high ranking official” to a “high ranking Cubs official”

They didn’t do anything “wrong” with Ohtani.

So Boob has a source higher ranked than the president of baseball operations? 🤨

This is impressive even for Nightengale.

I mean, in my opinion if you went from coming in second the first time to being eliminated before the jays now, there was something “wrong”. Either with their pitch or not fully comprehending the dollars necessary to play poker here.

Damn he doubled down.

Yeah, that makes me nervous. Have to wonder if some of Jed’s frustration was that it’s true and he knew it came from his camp.

Nightengale: Hey Tom, hope you and the rest of the Ricketts family are enjoying Nashville. Hey I wanted to ask, how did Jed convince you to offer $500m for Ohtani?

PTR:  Wait what?!? I’m not paying $500 million for a horsefeathers baseball player. No damn way, we’re out on Ohtani.

I don't think Nightengale deserves the benefit of the doubt here. Bruce Levine, Jesse Rogers, and Jon Heyman have all said the Cubs remain involved in Shohei Ohtani currently. Sharma and others have suggested the Cubs would put together very large packages for Ohtani. Nightengale has a rampant history of being wrong and seems to be on an island here. Either, Nightengale suddenly has a reliable, high ranking Cub source, or, it's another case in a long line of "being wrong".

It's easy to fall into the "I don't like this reporter because he's providing information I don't want to hear" thing, but this is Bob Nightengale.

That was my thought. I guess he prefers that it not be out there that they’re out on Ohtani for leverage on other things they’re working on. Or maybe they’re doing his agent a solid by helping him raise the price by appearing to remain in.

Did Rogers update his stance from earlier? Last I heard he seemed to be sorta backing this up. I’m trying to figure out why this would have irked Jed so bad. Cause to be honest, if Bob is wrong and the cubs are in this, you’d almost think Hoyer would appreciate this “report” from Bob.

It would indicate the cubs have done the exact opposite to what Dave Roberts did this afternoon and kept a lid on their interest level.

I don’t have access to the athletic but saw a headline from Mooney that says the Cubs appear to be pivoting in other directions .Guys Ohtani isn’t going to happen . I really don’t care what Jed said tonight . He is pissed that it got leaked . He probably wanted to give the impression they were in it until the end .

Well, I love you Dfan, but this is also why you don't need to read into articles if you can't read them in full. The entire article is basically this line: "Though the Cubs are always kicking around ideas and thinking through contingency plans, here are some names to consider, based on information from league sources:"

It's an article that doesn't say anything about the Cubs and where they stand with Ohtani. It just is looking at other players the Cubs may or may not pursuit.

Mooney and Sharma basically said Cubs out on Ohtani and Yamamoto .

Where did they say they're out on Ohtani? I just read their article. It does say they're likely not going to go into Yamamoto. I promise you, there's not a word in that article suggesting they're out on Ohtani.
