Yeah, I think it’s a player by player thing. If he really has his heart set on the dodgers for instance, I’m sure the taxes won’t be a “dealbreaker”.

If he’s completely open to any and all teams it might be on the list of very tiny things that go into making such a large decision. I’m sure there’s factors well ahead of it, but it might feature somewhere on the list.

Right. That’s all I was trying to say. Wasn’t trying to get into an argument with somebody about it. Sometimes teams add money to the contract to somewhat offset that issue and sometimes we never hear about that. It’s likely a very marginal thing and hardly ever a deciding factor, but I’m sure it’s a part of negotiations a lot, meaning it is something. Losing millions of dollars is never a “nothing burger.” Not even to millionaires.

That’s not very secretive.

Uhh yeah that’s a terrible idea if the ad is legit and it’s intended to welcome a visiting Ohtani to Chicago.

Step 1: heavily leak strong interest in Ohtani, make it seem legitimate to excite the fan base and convince them the Cubs are willing to spend.

Step 2: blatantly ignore the 1 desire to have his meetings be secretive

Step 3: say “oh shucks we really tried” when he signs with the Dodgers

There are AD in Boston and New York as well . It’s nothing

Yep. I think it’s way overblown that Ohtani will “reportedly” hold it against club if they go public with their interest. Or hold it against any city that puts up a large ad for him for his potential arrival.

Shohei is not going to stay away from his first choice club just because his second choice club kept things more hush-hush.

Eh, I tend to believe there's something to the idea that the Ohtani camp wants this quiet. How much he'l "hold it against" a team is hard to figure out. With that said, these ads seem like they're just put on by the MLB and have nothing to do with the Cubs or a city trying to sign Ohtani. I think what Ohtani wants to avoid is the media circus. He did that the last time with the Angels largely (no one really saw the Angels as a front runner) and I think that's the kind of courting he's looking for again. Quiet, out of the limelight until it happens.

lol, athletes not wanting to play in California due to taxes. And then choosing to play in a high-tax state like PA or NY. They're not playing in the Bahamas. Makes as much sense as politicians in Alabama talking about why they landed a manufacturer.

People listen to right wing talking points like it is reality.  If that were true, he would go to a team in Texas or Florida.

Wow, that’s blown way out of proportion. The thought was simply made that it might be something he would consider as a positive about Chicago. No one suggested it was a big deal or something that would factor in heavily.

An example from Bryce Harper and Scott Boras was given with a direct quote as well. Quite a bit of mental gymnastics used to actually turn that into an argument.

Scott Boars talking out of his ass is not a weighty piece of evidence.

No, the post stated that was the reason the high California taxes as to why he nixed the Giants. Not one of the reasons, THE reason

Poor wording on my part. I know what I wrote but didn’t mean it that way. Y’all have still blown this way out of proportion. This has gotten annoyingly old quick though. Y’all can keep beating a dead horse if you’d like… over a nothing comment. I’d rather use the thread for actual Ohtani updates now.

I think the state taxes stuff is similar to the 'he had an offer for more money' leaks that come out after a player signs, sometimes specifying a particular team.  It's one of those revelations that basically benefits all parties(player, signing team, team that missed out) in terms of perception. As such while it's possible it is true, we can never know if it's something that's shared because it's true or in order to make everyone look a small bit better after the decision.

Having followed along maybe he worded it that way in his initial Harper post, - but soon clarified that as well -  but I never took it to mean that was the implication for Ohtani. At all. Just seems like you wanted to overreact to something today.

It was an example given with a direct quote. Whether you believe Scott Boras or not is one thing. I highly doubt anything like that is the deciding factor. The fact that it was mentioned at all shows that players take notice of it though.

Also you pay taxes based on where each game is played so it only impacts half of a players salary.  FWIW

I think they are a lock to land one. My guess is Yamamoto.

We'll see. Maybe it's hopeful wishing, but with the reports that Ohtani may not be super jazzed about the ballpark out there, it may be more realistic to get Yamamoto. But the Yankees are lurking there, and it's hard to beat the Yankees (I.E. Aaron Judge).

Especially if the Yankees are truly out on Ohtani.

What a wild, wild time that was when a handle called WetButt pretended to have solid sources.

Wasn't there also the KatyPerry handle a few years ago? We had the one guy here(Evenflow?) break I think the Jon Lester signing.
