Good for the Mets fans. Their owner realizes that the entire point of owning a baseball team is to try to win by any means necessary. He will make the money to cover this entire contract in like a month of his regular job.

Also, it's fun to have a villain to root against again. Haven't really had that since the Yankees in the 2000s/early 2010s. The Dodgers are just as good, but spend a reasonable amount and are just overall less hateable.

The Dodgers will always be hateable because their fans are such asshats.

The other thing that's interesting to me is that this might be the first move that actually improves the Mets over last year's team?

Nimmo, Diaz, and Ottavino were re-signings and are coming off career years

Robertson is like for like with May or Lugo

Senga and Quintana project similarly to Bassitt and Walker of last year and/or this year

Verlander is a likely health upgrade over 2022 DeGrom but of a similar caliber SP

Narvaez is probably a small upgrade at C

OMG if this is about something he's had since he was like 17...horsefeathering hilarious

If its not a back issue maybe a degenerative knee condition that hasn't been an issue to this point but likely would be as Correa hits his 30s? Either that or the Giants just got cold feet on the contract, but seems unlikely given that they were far enough down the road that they had a press conference scheduled and they were showcasing him in their ticket ads.

I'll be fascinated to see what they do next offseason. I'm only eyeballing rosters so actual projection systems might differ, but even after their spending spree I'm not sure if they're the favorites to win their division or be a Top 3 team in the NL. So a middle of the road outcome would be losing in the wild card to the Padres again(because 1) baseball and 2) all it takes is one injury/collapse to a 40 year old for them to be at a pitching disadvantage), and they're currently already at 270 LT payroll for 2024. Does Cohen just keep going until results change(which might be an expensive and funny treadmill given the age of this roster)? Does he get bored realizing the spending isn't linearly correlated with success? Do the other owners try to blow up his car Michael Clayton style?

what pleasure do you derive from these criminal parasite owners allocating capital efficiently

At a minimum it would be funny to watch a criminal parasite think he can dominate the league by parachuting in and tossing money at whatever suits his fancy only to have it fail, but bigger picture it'd be reassuring to spend time following a sport that doesn't ultimately boil down to purely being the ownership olympics. It'd be one thing if Cohen were trading for a bunch of pre-arb players and giving them 12 year extensions or otherwise campaigning to reform the player salary structure, but in the same way I'm not concerned about the marginal P&L of owners I'm also not terribly motivated by the top percentile of the player pool getting marginally more money thanks to his efforts.

Stevie is a complete piece of horsefeathers and should be in prison for life, but at least he’s spending all this money on baseball players (that hopefully forces other owners to do it/get rid of the LT/cap ideally) and it leaves him less money to do insider trading and violate other securities laws.

Wonder if this will put pressure on other owners to spend. I'm guessing no as most owners will tell you that a) Cohen has triple the net worth of any other owner except the Jays owner and b) NYC market provides revenue opportunities that most markets don't have access too. Not to say that those excuses have merit by any means but its enough to get the heat off of someone like Tom Ricketts.

the mets really need to win or we'll never stop hearing from the bootlickers about how spending doesn't equal winning

WAY too late to worry about that.

ill be honest, i couldn't care less who pays what or how anyone wins (except the cubs, go buy em all)

billionaires giving these [expletive] 26 year old republicans 400 million to play baseball games no one watches or cares about doesn't make me feel good. i dont care if the mets win spending 500 million or the As win spending 12 million, they all make too much money

like if you met carlos correa the human and he was like hey i have 800 million in the bank you'd be like horsefeathers this guy, but because a billionaire gives him the money im supposed to be like yeah go off king. horsefeathers them all
