Maybe there needs to be a third type of passing interference penalty. You have holds and then PI which cover a pretty big swath of tick tack minor grabs, incidental contact, and push offs, and then a guy just getting mugged. Make all the ticky-tack ones a 10 yard spot fouls and only the most egregious a 15 yard spot foul that is purely booth reviewable, but not open to coaches challenge.

Shouldnt slow down the game much if any then.

I propose the new 10 yard penalty retain the name pass interference and the 15 yard penalty be termed pass mugging.

Edit- or just get rid of all the ticky tack one altogether honestly.

So let’s take stock of where Fields is right now amongst starting QBs

Definitely better at this point:

Allen, Mahomes, Burrow, Hurts, Lamar, Herbert, Tua

I realize he has to get better as a passer but outside of that group who can you confidently say is better than fields? You have the old guard who have better track records than Fields but currently not playing better. That includes Rodgers, Brady, Russ, Stafford. Then you have guys who are solid but don’t have the ceiling Fields does. That group is pretty much Cousins and Carr. After that it’s people that are clearly worse than Fields right now. Yes that includes Kyler, Lawrence, Goff, Jimmy G, Geno.

If you *just* look at the last 2-3 games, I agree you can make a case that Fields is playing like a top-10 QB.

Give coaches exactly one PI challenge. That’s it. Use it wisely.

Nah, I hate all coach challenges tbh. Make them all booth review and they have to be done quick, XFL style.

Last week when I looked at his QBR going back to the Vikings game, it came out to 60 (this probably isn't exactly right since I didn't weight each game by # of dropbacks). Over a full season coming into today, a 60 mark would rank him 10th in the NFL between Jalen Hurts and Derek Carr.

His score for today just came out, and it's a 95.3. That puts him at ~67 over his last five. Currently a full season mark of 67 would rank 4th just ahead of Geno Smith (!?!).

It's obviously cherry-picking, but basically since the Vikings game he's been playing like a second tier QB. Tua, Allen, and Mahomes are all in the high 70's for the season, but Fields recent play compares favorably to essentially anyone else.

i'd feel a lot better about those comments had we won

But this is where I remind you draft positioning improved so you feel better again.

this is where I remind you that Poles has yet to prove he can draft at all so you should feel doom again

eta: I probably get excited about draft position a lot less than most do, but so far the best pick the Bears have had in (probably) the last 50 years was a guy who was falling in the 1st round. Higher picks are obviously good, but if you don't know what to do with them...good luck. Poles first offensive pick was a 25 year old return guy who sucks at everything. Inspiring

19 times out of 20, I think ref complaints are overblown, but that might be the worst I have ever seen.

Better team had the win stolen from them

Better team?

I can't even imagine what it's going to look like next year if Fields can play like this but also has a competent offensive line and maybe (if I'm being greedy) another real NFL receiver or two.

He's still got some flaws as a passer, but he's perfectly cromulent and when teams are forced to account for his running, there will be plenty of windows to pass into.

It will be a massive failure by Poles and co. if they don't add 1-2 more above replacement level WR's this offseason.

I know the popular thing is to compare every early QB struggles to Allen, but the Hurts track Y1-2-3 is totally doable, and that doesn't have to be a ceiling (as Fields is naturally more talented than Hurts in most ways I'd say).

I'm a known idiot so I'm not going to make predictions.

But if Fields plays here on out the way he has the last few weeks, they can 100% be a championship contending team next season.

He outperformed Tua today with a fraction of the weapons.

It won't be easy. There's just stone cold nothing on the FA market. That's why we paid through the nose for Claypool.

I would rather lose 35-32 than 13-10. This does remind me of the Cubs in 2014. If Poles fixes the many holes on this team they will be contenders next year.

Draftkings has a bet on the Eagles first loss, vs the Bears is 16-1. I might take a shot at it. Eagles schedule is easy until then. Maybe that will be Fields coming out party game.

I mean there definitely will be capable, above replacement WR in FA. The question is if Poles sees a big-ish FA signing with Mooney and Claypool set for FA in 2024. Does he see three big-ish money WR or are they relegated to draft picks and lotto tickets now that he did the Claypool move.

It is a good trap game if they make it that long. Right before they play division rival and playoff contender Dallas.

Many of the top offenses really only have 2 big time targets. Hill and Waddle in Miami. Brown and Smith in Philly. Diggs and Davis in Buffalo. Chargers when healthy have Allen and Williams. Chiefs for years had Hill and Kelce. DK and Lockett in Seattle. Teams with 3 really good targets are rare, as there just aren't enough footballs to go around. Cincinnati is the exception more than the rule, and they may only go 2 deep going forward with Chase and Burrow soon to get big paydays.

Granted, the Bears 2 aren't nearly as good as any of those 2s with no top 10 level WR. But with Velus (assuming they don't give up on him and find a niche role for him) and if they keep Harry (and he has a solid 2nd half), that along with getting Kmet in the pass game more and not blocking, honestly MAY be enough to field a really respectable offense the way Fields is playing. I definitely don't think you see them spend on a WR. IDK that they'd draft a WR top 10 now either. Seems more of a luxury than a necessity, if today is a glimpse on how much a factor Claypool will be (should have been 2 PI calls). Of course, the wildcard is the 125Mil. If they pay for 2 OL and some pieces on defense, BPA may truly be one of the top WRs in the draft.
