Bears Week 7 @ Patriots, Monday Night Football 10/24

Posted

Football Outsiders also has them in the 8-10 range

Yea they were absolute dead last in Team DVOA going into last night. That bumped them up to 28.

31st on Offense DVOA. 15th on D.

Re Fields:

Early peak at TTT data from PFF for last night shows he was still holding the ball too long in the pocket, on average. While there were moments I thought that was the case, I thought he did look more decisive. Be interesting how the tape watchers grade him on some of those decisions (was he holding for throws that were there or nothing was there?)

Also thought that while he took a few sacks, he smartly threw a few away, and obviously extended a few. So a net overall balanced night picking his spots on when to extend plays.

As a side not I did kind of enjoy Pennell' blind side block of the Patriots' C, without question the [expletive] tried to hurt Fields on the Herbert TD. Plus, Mac Jones kicking Brisker in balls, that wasn't an "accident" or "unfortunate". It's nice to see dirty, cheap shot artists get a little taste of their own medicine once in a while.

The crack back is a penalty and like, I get it. But I didn't think it was that bad in real time. Oh well, its the rules and its there to protect people so I get it.

You mean like Fields was protected when he got speared in the back and sandwiched by the Patriots?

Mustipher is better as a reliever. That pretty much matches up with what I thought I saw last night. He played pretty well. Schofield was good. Jenkins again was strong. Honestly, he's the only clear starting level OL on the roster right now. I thought Jones also did well, but he saw like 0 of Judon who only rushed against Borom, who's pass blocking grade is better than I thought it'd be.

Looking over at ESPN, Justin Fields for his last 4 games has a 49.6 QBR. That would rank 19th in the league among current full season marks. His last 3 games he has a 54.6 QBR, which would rank 13th.

We can't just wave off those first three games right now as that's nearly half his season. But the Giants game onward has felt like pretty normal young QB stuff. Hopefully as we get further from those early games it continues to become clear that those were the anomaly.

Those first three weeks also included playing in a deluge, in Green Bay, and in high winds (iirc). Again, no excuses, you have to perform in any weather for football. But there is definitely context there. And GB is obviously not a great team this year, so it seems the staff and players both had a bad game with both the planning and the execution.

I mean, at minimum, Justin Fields is giving us NFL caliber play right now, whereas earlier in the year it wasn't clear if the offense was even like, professional level.

NFL Caliber play can also be bad, but not like, sub-50% completion percentage disaster play.

Relatedly Kyler Gordon was horrific the first few games but he's looked really good the last 3ish as well

His interception was a really good play too. Yes, Zappe held it way too long before making the throw, but he was in pretty good coverage and made a good play on the ball.

Gordon basically refused to score a TD on that one. He certainly could have outrun everyone down the sidelines if he wanted to. I thought that was odd, but he was tired and the game was over at that point.

Didn't Tywuan Thornton run him down? He was the fastest receiver at the combine with a 4.28 or something crazy

I posted that video yesterday and I think the best response was that it looks like bad Madden AI

that play alone seems to run contrary to Mustiphers high pass block grade, but it also looks very typical of his play in general

That was horsefeathering fun last night. Fields still has a long way to go but it feels like so many people still fail to acknowledge this is only his 2nd season in the league and he has been given very little help. Put some weapons around him and players that can actually block in front of him and with more experience I think he can be a Pro Bowl caliber player on a regular basis. That would easily make him the best Bears QB ever.

yeah, but Gordon definitely let off the gas. I wonder if he was thinking too much about maintaining possession to burn clock. Or if he just got tired.

Yeah it was Thornton, but Gordon wasn't letting it go either or running away from him (into the field).

I sometimes wonder if PFF has an easier time when they can tell what a guy's assignment is, as opposed to when he's just running around randomly in space.

Thornton did run him down, but Gordon looked like he was running out of steam also

I'll be honest, I've lost a little bit of respect for PFF's Oline grading after Michigan was given a mediocre run block rating after running for over 400 yards on Penn State. In fact Penn State had a considerably higher run block rating in the game despite rushing for 300+ less yards. Now I get it, the point of grading is to try to rate performance beyond the ultimate result so you will occasionally see grades that don't jive with what actually happened but man the results plus the eye test really didn't match up to what the grades were.
