27 year old 2nd baseman who had a cup of coffee in the bigs last year? Ok baseball people, tell me why this is something to maybe get excited about.

Reading all of the comments, it seems like the reason to get excited is that he still has options left.

Aside from Jensen those were all obvious choices. Good for Jensen though. Hope he has a good season.

I didn't follow too closely, who are the top guys that didn't make the cut and exposed to the Rule 5?

Chase Strumpf, Cam Sanders, Kohl Franklin, Riley Thompson, Luis Devers

Kohl Franklin not being protected is a little surprising. He might not be major league ready but he was hitting 100+ this year and can maybe be a starter still.

Ah ok. Thanks. I could see a team rolling the dice on strumpf or sanders.

He was getting torched in 3 inning starts at South Bend(where he couldn't throw strikes, didn't prevent HR, and didn't get GB), even if they had protected him he might've run out of option years before he was ready to be a bullpen piece, never mind a starter. Especially with the more restrictive roster rules around bullpens next year, if someone can make him work at the MLB level all year(and somehow not stunt his development further), you tip your cap and move on.

I had a slight preference for Sanders v. Jansen because Sanders had made it to AAA and shown signs the RP conversion could be fruitful, but ultimately it's a marginal decision.

Danis Correa is another guy in the Sanders mold at risk of getting nabbed. Can throw 100+ and just a phone call away at Iowa, but also has yet to really perform.

I'm hopeful that we don't get ransacked too hard. Everyone seems to be in agreement that every team had a lot of tough decisions so the bar to be picked is much higher this year. But the quality and proximity of some of the unprotected names still makes me nervous.

I expect basically nothing but 3rd tier signings that they hype like they're first tier and I continue to watching maybe 2 or 3 games a season.

There’s been so much noise and smoke about us doing a big addition or two for literal months, idk how that can be your expectation. Literally everyone from Jed to Ross to beat guys to national guys say we’re gonna be doing some significant additions.

not to mention they did more than just 3rd tier signings last year

I follow the farm while the major league team is bad

Dodgers waived Bellinger, now is the time to sign him to a 1-year deal to reestablish his value. Gives the Cubs time to ease Davis and Mervis into the starting lineup.

Didn’t Jed basically come out and say we weren’t signing a top tier guy?

Ultimately, those near-decade-long deals are going to be avoided by Hoyer this winter. Does that mean it’s something he’d never do down the road? That can’t be ruled out. But the Cubs don’t see this as the time for such a move. It doesn’t rule out this group of players; it just limits how far Hoyer and company will go to get one right now.

I’ll say it again: there won’t be long term contracts until Heyward’s is off the books.
