2022 Complain about your fantasy team that no one cares about discussion

Posted

Creating a new one for 2022 for reasons.

I had a terrible fantasy football year last year, tons of decisions that seemed good on the surface but ended up being the wrong moves.

I was 1-8 at the deadline so I sold off a big chunk of my team for draft picks and potential keepers (and then ironically won my next 4 games which put me a win and some help away from making the playoffs and I promptly lost).

I need help with keeper decisions.

12 team Superflex (basically 2 QBs) league which gives 6 points for passing TDs, 0.5 PPR and starts 3 RB and 4 WR. I get to keep 2 players and lose my draft pick from the round they were drafted last year.

My early draft looks like this: 1st round (3 overall), 1st round (4 overall), 2nd, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 9, 10

My potential keepers:

-Javonte Williams (10th round)

-Travis Etienne (5th round - sketchily grabbed him at end of season for potential keeper)

-Darnell Mooney (12th round)

-Justin Fields (9th round)

I'm thinking Javonte and Fields as my keepers. Fields is obviously a big gamble but a couple of things but the Bears have a very soft schedule and Fields doesn't have to be a good QB to be a good fantasy QB due to his legs. The teams that win my league typically get lucky by drafting a QB in a later round that turns into a stud (2 years ago I had Kyler and Lamar and dominated my league to win the championship). With 2 high 1st round picks I can take another QB that is a little more established and still grab a top WR.

Thoughts? Happy to provide any advice for anyone else as well.

Williams is the easy pick, but I'd probably lean Mooney as the other.

The tougher part for me to weigh in your scenario is how valuable Fields might be in future years vs. this upcoming season.

I can only keep them for 1 season. Fields vs. Mooney is tough, especially because they obviously have an effect on each other. QBs are so damn valuable in this league... 16 QBs were gone by the end of the 2nd round last year (including keepers), so if you can grab one of your 2 QBs with a later round keeper, it puts you in good position to have 2 QBs wrapped up quickly and you can focus on getting quality WR/RB while other teams are still trying to grab QBs. For instance 2 years ago I had Lamar as an 8th round keeper and Kyler as a 9th round keeper and was able to grab guys like Davante Adams, AJ Brown, Dalvin Cook, Zeke Elliott and cruise to the championship.

It's a gamble obviously with Fields because the Bears fan in me isn't particularly sold on Fields (though hopeful) and realize that it could backfire spectacularly, but if he can get 500 yards rushing and 5 TDs on the ground (had 420 and 2 in 12 games last year) his floor is immediately much higher even if he's a mediocre passer.

I am taking your rec on Mooney seriously, I've gotten other similar advice, I just really want to believe in gambling with Fields which will allow me to have strengths everywhere else on the roster.

3000 passing yards, 18 passing TD, 10 INT, 4 fumbles lost, 500 rushing yards, 5 rush TD would put him at QB16 last year. That seems doable for Fields if he actually improves with experience and an offense geared towards his strengths.

Do teams generally fill their rosters before grabbing a 3rd QB? I.e Will QBs of other bad teams be around at that point? Mills, Wentz, Goff, or Jones?

I was highish on Fields or Tua as my “horsefeathers all the QBs I wanted are gone early” late round starter, but some reporting has me backing off Fields.

I’m pretty sure at least 2-3 teams had a 3rd QB before some teams got their 2nd but the 25th QB (first one that is guaranteed to be a 3rd QB) was in the 9th (Carr). Every keeper listed there is available this year and everyone non keeper can theoretically be kept. I’m projecting about 8 of them to be kept.

Curious what you’re hearing about Fields. Obviously I follow Bears closely but I hear a mixed bag, nothing that would dissuade me either way. I know if I keep Fields it’s a decent gamble but I haven’t see anything to remove the hope that he could end up an average fantasy QB.

I'm sure you're more in-tune than I am, I'm a very passive Bears fan, but had read on the Athletic about the passing game being the most disappointing part of camp. I think I'd go Javonte and Mooney because I expect the Jags to be terrible and Etienne to not be able to stay in on passing downs. I always go for the worse player(within reason) when there's a substantial difference in keeper round. You're gaining 1-2 rounds on Etienne's ADP vs 6-7 rounds on Mooney's. Also, I see you don't have a 5th round pick listed, does that mean you'd have to forfeit a 4th rounder for Etienne?

I thought I was sitting pretty at TE with Kittle and Kmet as my backup. 2 weeks in, and I have zero points from that position. Awesome!
Posted

So after scoring the most points in my league week 1, I’m on track to score the least number of points in weeks 2 and 3 and start 1-2. Do I hold or make massive changes??

QB (start 2): Kyler Murray, Justin Fields, Matt Ryan

WR (start 4): Justin Jefferson, Davante Adams, AJ Brown, Drake London, Garrett Wilson, Elijah Moore

RB (start 3): Saquan Barkley, Javonte Williams, Miles Sanders, Rashaard Penny

TE: Pat Freiermuth

K: Robbie Gould

Defense: Chargers

Theoretically a ton of talent but 16 of the 19 players I’ve started have underperformed projections the last 2 weeks (Barkley, Javonte and Gould still to play this week).

Desperately need to improve QB2 and RB3 and have the WRs to trade.

This week I came into the week projected to score 178 points, the most in my league. Currently my projection for the week is 99, which would be the lowest point total in the league this year.

Also I can kick myself, last week I picked up the chargers defense and dropped Khalil Herbert because 4 of the next 6 matchups seemed great but they’ve been garbage and Herbert looks like a potential league winner

I won a league last year and this year I've already dropped David Njoku after 2 weeks of essentially being ignored only to see him make 9 catches this week and benched Devonta Smith for the same reason only to see him go berserk today. Guess I used up my good fortune.

I'd like an update to see if UMFan is in last place.

LOL I'm 3-3 and in 6th place (8 teams make playoffs) and scored the 7th most points out of 12 teams, but have struggled mightily losing Javonte and Penny to injuries. The worst part is that I spent all week before Penny's injury debating whether to pick up Kenneth Walker as insurance, but we only have 4 bench spots so its usually difficult to hang on to a handcuff especially with bye weeks starting. Of course I didn't and of course Penny got hurt and now someone else gets to enjoy walker.

My RBs this week with a Sanders bye are Barkley, Latavius Murray and Rachaad White. WRs with Jefferson and Brown on byes are Adams, Drake London, Garrett Wilson and Wan'Dale Robinson. So I'm basically 3-4

Edit: Also, someone had to drop Cordarrelle Patterson when he went on IR (we don't have IR spots), so I am trying to play with a 3 man bench until he's healthy

Been at my current job about 15 months. Joined the work money league this year. And my team is embarrassing me! I didn't know how these people drafted and waited too long at QB. Ended up with Tom Brady (typical top 8 QB) and Trey Lance (thought would have a chance to surprise like 2021 Jalen Hurts).

Week 1- League low 72.48 points. Three of the players in my lineup got hurt and held to less than 5 points, not including DJ Moore who had Baker Mayfield ignoring him. Also not including Brian Robinson who got shot, and who I had to cut and who is now on another team.

Week 2- Ran into a buzzsaw. 177 points against. Whatever, it happens.

Week 3- Lost by 9. Aaron Jones, DJ Moore and Hunter Henry combined for exactly 10 PPR points

Week 4- Hey, a win.

Week 5- Lost by less than 9. Tee Higgins hurt in 1st quarter, puts up a 0. Also, didn't realize the Eagles kicker was out so got a 0 there as well.

Week 6- Won! Beat the worst team in the league by 13!

Week 7- Season high 150.5 points! 2nd highest point total of the week.....but guess who I played? Yep, high score of the week. Watched my team lose Sunday night as Kenny Pickett threw an INT late (actually threw 2 so I lost by 2.4 instead of just 0.4). Opponent had Miami D and Jaylen Waddle. So, either Pittsburgh score (-2 for Dolphins D) and no more than 3.6 more points from Waddle on the ensuing drive OR a turnover on downs and Miami runs out the clock with the lead is what I needed. He gave 4 points to Miami D.

Yikes, that's a rough go of it. You've mentioned a lot of the names but what does your full team look like now? Also how many teams make the playoffs? The one thing I like about my league is 8/12 teams make the playoffs so a doomsday start is not the end of the season. The 2-5 team in my league is 1 game out of the playoffs.

6 of 12 make playoffs. I'm tied for 9th (aka 2nd to last) and actually am about 8 points from top 1/2 of the league in scoring. There's a 5-2 team with the 2nd lowest point total. I am 2 games out of playoff spot.

But my team is:

QB- Brady, Mariota (hoping to add Tua off waivers)

RB- Aaron Jones

Rb- Dalvin Cook

WR- DJ Moore

WR- Tee Higgins

TE- David Njoku (now out 2-5 weeks), claim in on Geisicki

Flex- Dameone Pierce

Flex- Allen Lazard

K- Seattle

Def- Cowboys

Have Mattison (Cook handcuff), Hardman, Romeo Doubs, Darnell Mooney, and Elijah Mitchell on my bench. Have had some injuries and underachieving, but I don't see a roster that gets me in the money.

Did that in my other money league, but I'll make the playoffs in that league. I'm only 3-4, but I feel good about my team.

Thats pretty rough tbh. It's not necessarily a terrible team but several guys would be on lists of "most disappointing players for their draft position". I would go crazy on the waiver wire...no sense in holding onto Mooney or Mitchell (unless he's on IR). Try to find some guys that have elite upside to chill on your bench. Not sure if anyone owns Rachaad White, but that would be an example. TB's season is going south and depending on what Brady decides to do could be starting a rebuild. White has gotten rave reviews and has been productive when he's played..could easily see the Bucs deciding to split the backfield or even give White a chance to be the lead back at some point. Wan'Dale Robinson maybe at WR? He's a 1st round pick and due to injuries and attrition is getting an opportunity. The Giants don't throw a ton but his target share has been increasing.

Basically try to find some home runs before they become HRs. I had one season where I started 1-5 and based on getting lucky with some waiver moves ended up losing in the championship game. Picked up DeVante Parker, Breshad Perriman, Deebo Samuel, Mostert, Golden Tate and somehow they all hit. This was 2019 so those names don't sound very cool but they were productive back then.

Edit: Another one I thought of is D'Onta Foreman but he may already be taken. He looked better than Chubba by a little last week, Chubba is hurt (not sure for how long), and the Panthers have the easiest SOS for RBs remaining. Not a sexy pick but you might get lightning in a bottle.

I've sworn off drafting TEs high forever. Unless its Kelce they are so fickle from year to year that I'd rather strengthen my skill positions and stream TEs. I went against this strategy last year and drafted Kittle and he was hurt half the year and unproductive about half the time he was playing. This year you have guys like Pitts and Waller who have been bad values, etc. This year I drafted Friermuth in one of the last rounds and he's ended up giving me a consistent floor so far so I haven't had to stream (yet). Not going to ever give me Kelce weeks, but I hold my own on the TE matchup most weeks.

Another thing, is this work league has been going for a while, and when a person leaves the company, they leave the league. The other person to join the league is my teammate, who's a woman, and is the only 6-1 team in the league. She also was randomly given the last pick too. So extra sad for me.

in hindsight, Kyle Pitts was not a good 3rd round pick

I had him in an auction league. Just picked up my first loss this week, which he contributed to, obviously

So I have a trade out for Kelce utilizing my RB depth (in addition to auction, it's keeper). Have Henry, Taylor, Stevenson, and Walker, with CPatt on IR and Henderson as my 5/6.

So I offered Walker for Kelce and Bills DST. Of course Kelce is on bye so I'd roll out Pitts one last time.

If the guy accepts I really won't have to make any lineup decisions each week other than a few remaining byes, and of course for injury. No more D streaming either, which has hurt me at times this year.

I'd be:

Hurts, Henry, Taylor, Stevenson, Olave, Diggs, Kelce, Bills, kicker.

My bench would be Mooney, Samuel, Gallup, Rondale Moore, Henderson, Patterson, Pitts (? If I don't just cut him), and I'll be able to make another add once I drop my current D.

Walker will be hard to part with, especially as he'll have elite keeper value in this league, but I've never won the league and I'm ready to go all in.

Patterson or Fournette? 1/2 per

Fournette has been iffy on the run. Surviving catches and TDs. Patterson coming back from injury.

I’d say Fournette thought very tempting to start Patterson against the Chargers poor run defense. I’d just be worried that Patterson is eased back into the mix. Fwiw I’m torn trying to decide between starting Patterson and Khalil Herbert.

Definitely a tough one too. We need to start one then lay a bet down that the other one will get a TD to hedge!
