Hermosillo is exactly the type of player the Cubs should want right now. There's pretty good potential for him to ball out for a couple seasons and then we can trade him as he enters arb seasons as a 30 year old.

horsefeathering get rid of Heyward. Don't just give Hermosillo away. There's solid potential there.

I think to me one of the things that would be especially frustrating about this is that he's likely a plus CFer while no one else on the roster is even average.

Based on what Jed did this winter, and even more importantly what he didn't do, the best version of this team is a fantastic defense with a solid offense. Think last year's Cardinals. Trading Hermosillo for Heyward out there would seem to undercut that pretty significantly. And it's not like there's much (any?) offensive benefit gotten in exchange.

Now Heyward vs. Ortega, that's much more defensible argument even though we've heard much less about Ortega being a possibility to be cut.

Jed seems to be trying to put his mark on this team. The best way to do that is to cut Heyward.

So its a given that Pujols will hit .190 for the season but bat .400 against the Cubs, right?

vs Cubs, career: .295/.396/.609 1.004 OPS

vs Reds, career: .343/.423/.626 1.049 OPS

vs Brewers: .325/.420/.604 1.024 OPS

vs Pitt .358/.444/.664 1.108 OPS

He was just terrifying, to everyone, all the time, back then. Wasn't just an us thing.

But also, yes, given our pitching staff, probably.

Against those teams in 2019/21 (didn't play them in 17, 18, 20):

65 PA - .203/.262/.254 for a .516 OPS.

I didn't bother splitting them out to each team since it's only 65 PA total against the 4.

Doesn't mean he won't somehow hammer us, but he does suck now.

I'm bracing for him to magically revert to at least something resembling STL performance levels for short stretches and be overall way better than he has been most of the time since he left. I know it's unlikely but this is STL and I never rule anything out

He's going to be awful and a waste of roster space for the entire time he's on the team. He might luck into having some meaningful hits, and those events will be magnified in importance because they will be notable incidents in an otherwise terrible year. In short, he's going to suck, and on the rare occasions he doesn't people will make those incidents more important than they really are.

Idiot Cards fans have caused the ticket price for the last home game this year to already spike after he signed. I was giving my friends down here a hard time and said they should plan on the last home series of July for his last game.

I will say this, I don't think it's a wise decision for him to be on the Cardinals roster if they intend to win the division. But, I think it's great that he is getting a chance to end his career with the organization he started with and for the Cardinal fans. It's the sort of thing an organization that cares about its fan base does.

Javy, Bryant, and Rizzo aren't in the same category of player that Pujols is/was with the history he has with the Cardinals, but if the Cubs aren't competitive I would love to see them get to retire as Cubs. I strongly suspect the Cubs are not like the Cardinals though. Sentimental nonsense, I know.

Yeah, I thought it would have been a dumb move for any team trying to win games, which was why the Colorado rumors made a lot of sense to me. I'm definitely hoping for an ugly end to things and all those people who called him a trader, dropped the N bomb on him and otherwise disparaged him for signing with the Angels come back out of the woodwork. A buddy told me the last like 11 Instagram posts from the Cards have all been Pujols related and now they've started selling a 5 game Pujols ticket package. I'd be pissed if I was guy who was going to be an everyday contributor and he's the guy getting all the press when he's going to be a bit player at best.

horsefeathering Dodgers press all the right buttons all the time.

Great trade for both teams.

Agree. But I like it more for the Sox than Dodgers. Put aside that position players are better than relievers, I think it’s more likely they get about 120 good games from Pollock than the Dodgers get about 65 good innings from Kimbrel.

Besides, anything that gets Eloy out of left field is good for Eloy, the Sox, the fans in left field who might be in the way, the structure of the ballpark, and any other bystanders or witnesses to Eloy’s attempts to field.

Hmm

That trade makes no sense for the Mets, imo, even if they need pitching. Smith can play some OF at least. Hosmer is 1B/DH only and so is Alonso and then they got Cano, Davis, Canha, McNeil who all really can’t play a lot of (if any) positions positively and probably should be DH’s.
