I hate Ricketts with every fiber of my being if the day FA opens he's not throwing like 8/400 at Shohei. He fills the need for an impact bat and for a top of the rotation pitcher. Filling those roles for 25M each is a damn steal.

A-Rod, highly paid baseball pundit, has a solution so obvious it's a wonder no one else in MLB has considered it.

Jed and Tom are of one mind with this stuff or Tom wouldn't have hired him after Theo left.

Having said that, I have a hard time determining Ohtani's value. He's either going to get paid less than he's worth and the owner will be able to support a team enough to win or he's going to get paid what he's worth and will handcuff the team.

Now before anyone starts seeing red and foaming at the mouth, we all know that almost any team could do both, but we also know the vast majority of teams won't.

If he's a hard-core west coast guy, then it's the Dodgers, maybe SF. If he's open to anywhere, it's probably the Dodgers, Mets, or the Yankees. I don't think the Ricketts will be serious bidders.

What is that like 6-7 months recovery if it needs surgery?  Or is another TJS still in play?

I'm not sure if there's a surgical option that isn't TJS.  As a point of comparison, in 2018 Ohtani last pitched on September 2nd and kept hitting through the season, had TJS at right after the season ended, and was hitting every day in May 2019.  The pandemic meant he wasn't pitching regularly again until 2021, where it looks like he was regularly skipped and pitched 130 IP.

Anyone want to hazard a guess what effect this may have on his impending free agency?

Depends a lot on what Ohtani wants.  He's made allusions before that he didn't know how long he wanted to pitch, and that's gonna come flying back to the forefront of the FA conversation if a 2nd TJS is on the menu.  If he wants to pitch indefinitely, then instead of getting a 29 y/o hitter and pitcher, you're essentially bidding on a 29 y/o hitter and 30-31 y/o pitcher with an additional arm surgery in his past, so I imagine bids get scaled down a bit.  Or maybe there's some middle path where he telegraphs that he wants to fix this and pitch for X years and give everyone clarity on what they're signing up for so teams are comfortable maxing out to that limit?  Hard to say.

Do you think about turning him into a closer if he still wants to pitch?  That's a pretty easy solution to still allow him to DH every day and maintain significant value as a pitcher and is probably a lot easier on the arm.
