This will make the repeated viewings of my 2016 World Series Blu-rays very slightly more awkward.

In seriousness, good for them. Now change it to the Cleveland Spiders or we riot

Cleveland Naps is my favorite former name of theirs

Knowing full well how insensitive it is, I was nonetheless a bit sad to see the moniker has run it's course... until I saw this.

And then suddenly I was over it for some reason.

I like Spiders best if they go former team names.

The Spiders were a different team altogether. They were an NL team.

The Cleveland AL team was only ever:

Naps

Broncos

Lake Shores

Bluebirds

Rustlers

I know they were a different team, but they're also a totally defunct franchise. So they can surely get their hands on those trademarks I'd think.

I'm not sure how you would even market a franchise these days based on a team of "Spider" men.

Will be interesting to see if the pressure starts ratcheting up for the Chiefs, Braves and Blackhawks now. I know the Blackhawks have done a lot to engage with the local Native American community and the logic of how they acquired their team name is sound but I still believe that if Native Americans overwhelmingly do not want these names, a change should be made. It's not 'cancel culture' and its not up to white people to decide if a name used to symbolize a minority group of people is offensive to them or not.

I think the Blackhawks could conceivably just ditch the Indian head logo and tomahawk logo and keep the name, and even the gist of the imagery (basically this.) and avoid any further "issues". But I do think it's only a matter of time.

Fwiw though the relationship they used to have with a local NA org is no longer so at this point their outreach is basically informal and not affiliated.

Eta - the Hawks also are slightly different in that the name is inspired (granted by way of the military) by an actual person. Not sure if there's any descendents, but his people, in some form, make up a federally recognized tribe in the Sac & Fox Nation, so there would be the possibility of them more legitimately authorizing their use of any imagery in a similar way to colleges that use local tribal imagery with their support and consent.

Not sure about Chiefs, but I think the Braves name is safe. I’m pretty sure something like the Tomahawk Chop is going to go away, but the name itself is probably safe. The Braves have a pretty strong relationship with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and they are strongly opposed to a name change. Braves is just another name for warrior and a “brave” one at that. It’s hard to see how that name by itself could be construed as racially insensitive if it’s divorced from any culturally inappropriate iconography.

I always kinda figured that if they were going to lose the 'Braves' name, it was going to be because of the Chop. I think I recall the team trying to move away from it, and then people doing it at the games just to be spiteful. Hopefully that dies out, and yeah, don't think the name is overly offensive on its own.

Crowhoppers? I imagine OSU will not like the use of Buckeyes. They are crazy protective and also rabidly craven about all things OSU. to the point of having "The" before Ohio State in all official information. My diploma has "The Ohio State University" on it.

I was thinking of Rocks, but that might be too close to Colorado.

They are going to make a killing on merch sales this year.

Every time there is an expansion team or a rebranded one, I think about when I was a kid and the Rockies, Marlins and San Jose Sharks were all brand new. Just about every kid wanted one of those old Starter jacket pullovers with those big logos on the back of them. I think I still probably have my San Jose Sharks one laying around somewhere or it's in my parent's house.
