Leave it to the Brewers to solve Bauer.

I hate that horsefeathering team.

The Brewers suck, them handing the Reds some losses this week puts us in a spot to really widen the gap this weekend over the Reds and really not worry about them again.

Lol

Seriously you guys have been pushing this bs since 2017. And even if they are not as good as their record indicates, we look like total dogshit against their pitching (so chalk up several more Ws for them from that alone) and their pen locks down 1 run wins consistently. They are going to be a top 3 team in the division, not the Reds IMO.

They sucked in 2017 and we won the division, they caught a heater in 2018 and weren’t as good as us then but they bested us in the 1 game elimination, last year both teams sucked. This year they are 11-15 and just got swept by the Pirates and their pen literally blew a lead late yesterday. They have the second worst RD in the NL. They suck. The Reds are the better team with the pitching, so I’m happy for the Brewers to help us out here. Plus with us facing the Reds this weekend it puts us in a spot to control putting them away to a degree. Whoever finishes 3rd in the division probably isn’t making the playoffs, IMO.

The Brewers schtick the last few years has been:

A) One hell of a middle of the order

B) A bullpen of doom

C) An impressive ability to find which journeyman position players are going to dead cat bounce

Father time has taken the fangs out of A. B is still kicking (where the hell did Devin Williams come from?!?), but in a 60 game season the ability to leverage it is reduced. We saw it last week, they rode the pen hard to take 3/4 from us, but then it struggled against the Twins and Pirates. In a 162 game season they would have been able to punt a game or two to let it rest up a bit more. C is probably still a skill Stearns and co have, but again in a 60 game season, with no minors to boot, there isn't time to sort through guys.

I would guess there's not another team who's been more negatively affected by the new setup for this year. Definitely don't feel sorry for them though.

The Brewers are 12-15 and have the 10th best record in the NL to go with the 13th best run differential. 60 games is going to introduce a lot of randomness and I'm not a big believer in the Reds either, but that roster is just not very talented when Yelich and Cain/Grandal aren't combining for 13+ WAR. I'm not going to lament them winning individual games, especially so when more than half the league is making the playoffs so ordering over 60 games isn't as vital.

We're about halfway into the season, and the expanded AL playoff's participants are basically already decided barring a huge run by an also-ran that thought they might be good like the Angels or Red Sox.

Team - Playoff Odds (FG)

1. Athletics - 99.8%

2. Twins - 99.7%

3. Rays - 99.2%

4. Yankees - 99.0%

5. Astros - 97.2%

6. White Sox - 96.6%

7. Indians - 96.5%

8. Blue Jays - 61.9%

9. Orioles - 17.3%

10. Rangers - 7.3%

11. Angels - 6.3%

12. Royals - 6.3%

13. Red Sox - 5.7%

14. Tigers - 5.4%

15. Mariners - 1.7%

Contrast that to the NL, where there are really only 4 teams that have separated themselves from the pack:

1. Dodgers - 100%

2. Cubs - 97.6%

3. Padres - 96.2%

4. Braves - 91.6%

5. Cardinals - 75.8%

6. Mets - 69.4%

7. Brewers - 51.7%

8. Phillies - 42.9%

9. Reds - 37.2%

10. Giants - 31.7%

11. Nats - 30.3%

12. Rockies - 28.5%

13. Diamondbacks - 23.5%

14. Marlins - 23.0%

15. Pirates - 0.8%

I want the Toronto Big Ball Chunky Times in the playoffs as much as everyone, but the difference in odds between them and Baltimore feels extreme given that they are currently separated by half a game in the standings.

Yeah, they also have 7 H2H left vs each other with ~30 left. They should be close to similar odds with Toronto have a slight edge. Maybe like 30% Baltimore and 40% Toronto or so.

I think the difference in remaining schedule between the two and the relative performance thus far (TOR is +2 and BAL is -9) plays into the bulk of those odds. But yes, if Baltimore is suddenly ok, they could also make the playoffs, and have less of a climb to get there than anyone else.

I continue to be disappointed by how awful the Angels always are. Poor Mike Trout will be the greatest player of all time and never sniff a ring

The last time he was in a playoff game, minor leaguer Kris Bryant was sitting behind the plate watching

Isn’t it because Baltimore was projected to be terrible this year and Toronto wasn’t so 25-30 games isn’t enough to drastically change that, even in a short season?

Pujols moved to 3rd all-time on the RBI list tonight, he's had some good seasons as an Angel, don't think he played well enough to justify that contract. No where near the elite hitter he was as a Cardinal went from a 5+ WAR in his last season as Cardinal to 4.8, 3.9, 3.0. Seemed to full off the map overnight, I know he had some injury issues and age, I guess that explains his sudden decline.

Picking nits, but Pujols first season with the Angels was the only one where he put up over 3 fWAR, which was 2012. Since then he's had one other season above 2 fWAR, and in the last 5 years before 2020, he was worth a combined -0.2 fWAR. Disaster of a contract.

You'd think earlier on they'd gotten the elite Pujols for perhaps, one or two seasons, followed by a gradual decline instead, he forgot how to play baseball, overnight.
