i think he's getting mixed up thinking of local blackouts when the teams dont hit an attendance threshold, like used to happen in the NFL.

Yes. When I signed up for MLB.tv way back in the aughts one of the reasons the gave for blackouts was to encourage fans local to their favorite teams to buy tickets to the game instead of watching it on TV, so they blacked it out which makes no sense in a city that's 5+ hours away from the nearest baseball team that gets blacked out from 4 of them despite not having the option to watch them on their local TV station.

As I said, it's not the reason, but it's a reason they gave for the blackouts and it's completely absurd.

that's not a reason though. the reason is so that you have to pay for RSN carriage. attendance makes no sense as a reason to block MLB streaming. the games are still available to (most - not all, though, which is one of the dumbest things about this) of these people on TV in some form.

I don’t understand why these local advertisers on the local RSNs wouldn’t want thousands more eyeballs on their ads. Pirates are blacked out for me, but I go to Pittsburgh to see games. Wouldn’t Pittsburgh businesses want Ohio viewers to see their ads? What am I not understanding?

The Pittsburgh RSN wants Ohio Pirates fans to call their local cable deliverer and demand that it carries the local RSN so they can watch Pirates games. The RSN will charge that local cable deliverer a pretty decent fee for this right. If they don't black out the games, then there's no reason for all those cable companies to carry the RSN at all. So they pay MLB a ridiculous fee to, among other things, impose the blackouts to make sure they're the only way to watch the game for literally anywhere the team might have a concentration of fans.

Except Ohio cable companies do t give a horsefeathers and have no interest in carrying the Pittsburgh RSN, so here we are

What I wonder is how many of the 17 monitoring infections came from contact with the 66 people with intake infections... because 17 new infections after entering the protocol seems not great to me.

ouch. that's the biggest one to opt out so far, right?

depends what you think of posey at this point i guess and whether last year means he's done

crazy thing about kopech is he hasn't pitched in a real game since what, september 2018? that will be one long layoff. wonder what kind of impact that has on a guy's development (i'm sure he'll be fine).

So we’re a week out from opening night, and the Nationals still don’t know where they’re going to play their home games? And Juan Soto still hasn’t reported to camp?

Sounds like they’re more trying to game the system with the local rules more than anything.

Blue Jays not allowed to play games in Canada

"Unlike preseason training, regular-season games would require repeated cross-border travel of Blue Jays players and staff, as well as opponent teams into and out of Canada," Mendicino said. "Of particular concern, the Toronto Blue Jays would be required to play in locations where the risk of virus transmission remains high.

"Based on the best-available public health advice, we have concluded the cross-border travel required for MLB regular-season play would not adequately protect Canadians' health and safety. As a result, Canada will not be issuing a National Interest Exemption for the MLB's regular season at this time.''

Indians: Francisco Lindor, SS

Under club control through: 2021

Did you think anybody else would be listed in this spot? A Lindor trade feels inevitable, though it remains to be seen whether that will happen before Aug. 31 or sometime this offseason. A team acquiring the All-Star shortstop in-season would have Lindor for two pennant races and/or postseasons, though it’s unlikely that the Indians will lower their asking price even in a shortened season.

Get the heck on it, Theo

What would that cost the Cubs? Let's say he agrees to some sort of extension before the trade.

Marquez/B.Davis/Amaya/Happ too much or too little?

they're going to play in Buffalo, I believe their AAA park

Newest rumor I'm hearing is actually Pittsburgh, because there's only like 6 or 7 days of conflicts and the players complained about not playing in a major league park. Which, that means instead of 8 teams sharing the visitors clubhouse, you'd have 16. Not sure how high the ranks for importance.

Pretty sure they aren't exclusively using the clubhouses. I've seen video of some parks where they are using the luxury boxes as locker rooms, with only 1 or 2 players per suite

They aren't all sharing it at once. And with most evidence pointing to infection coming from person to person over extended period of time in close proximity rather than surfaces days later, it can't make much of a difference.

Negotiations for expanded playoffs have started up again, but there’s a hard deadline to get a deal done before the season starts tomorrow night.

i'm cool with it for this season only
