*Spring Training*

But Souza 1-1 with 3BB and a 2B today. OPS over 1.000 for spring. Considering he’s working back from such a devastating injury and missed a whole year +/- he doesn’t look washed or physically beat or anything.

yeah i think he might end up being a little better than just useful

Mekkes gives up 5 ER in 0.1 IP to lose today’s game. At least only 1 BB right?

He was all over the places and looked horrible. I know ST games don’t matter but that ending was frustrating.

I can tell we're close to the season and my glasses are getting rose colored because I'm letting myself get modestly excited for Chatwood

but we're not anywhere close

i mean we kinda are, which is crazy. 3 weeks from tomorrow.

Mixed bag for Kimbrel. Got 2 Ks and soft contact on 2 balls in play (GB to Rizzo and GB to Bote who booted it) but gave up a Dong too. Velo was only 95-96, which needs to get up 1-3 ticks before the season starts. The curve looked good.

3 damn weeks ago the world was a different place

I wish 3 weeks felt like a long time to me. When I was a kid, 2 weeks felt like what a few months feel like now. My perception of time is only getting worse, too. Exponentially accelerating to death. So fun.

I know it’s spring and all but Descalso is 2-21 with a 40% K rate so far in the spring. .095/.208/.095/.303

They're clearly not going to do the only sensible thing and cut him, so he should literally never play unless we're up or down 7 or more.

i don't think he's going to make it. the fast miller guy will over him.

Yup. Or possibly Phegley as a third catcher. The FO dumped Duensing in a similar situation last year and I expect the same here.

Kimbrel not fooling people.

I do believe Ross is not going to him multiple chances to blow this season. Given this, who can step in as the closer?

He's going to be fine guys.

There are things to worry about with Kimbrel(someone on twitter made the point that he really needs elite velocity since his fastball is so straight), but we're still talking spring training. He had 5+ ST ERAs in both 2013 and 2017 and in those years he had a cumulative 1.30 ERA

If Kimbrel were coming off a normal year this would be zero cause for concern. Being ~2 MPH below where you should be is perfectly normal for the first week of March, and he's throwing strikes and missing bats.

But last year was such a disaster, honestly I'd be worried by anything he did this spring. Even if he were sitting at 99 MPH I'd be worried that he overcompensated for last year and got ramped up too early.

I will not let 10 ST innings convince me that Chatwood is good now

Yeah, but what if he is....?

We could trade him at the deadline and sneak under that luxury tax threshold.
